CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

**********************

BRINLEY.

It's been two days since Xander has seen my sketches for the new orphanage. He and I have a meeting to discuss it with one of Xander's contractors.

Xander also agreed to keep this under wraps so the nuns don't find out; I want to surprise them.

The nuns will be able to bring in more help and more children. Katie had an idea to help get the kids into new homes.

Hopefully, a fundraiser will help bring the orphanage some finances and show off the beautiful kiddos.

Katie and I are going to the rental to tell the nuns the excellent news.

"Remember not to let it slip about the orphanage, okay?" I tell Katie as were walking. I love Katie, but sometimes she has a big mouth.

"I won't," She says, glancing at me.

I raised my brow, and she pursed her lips.

"I won't. Trust me,"

I nod my head.

I trust Katie. I just don't trust her mouth.

"How are things with you and Xander?" Katie changes the subject.

"Good. The other day he told me I will make a great queen,"

Katie stops walking, and her mouth drops.

"Did he propose?" She asks.

I shake my head.

"No. He just meant with the way I am with the kingdom, that I would be great at it,"

Katie nods.

"You will be. But it sounds like to me; he wants to marry you," Katie grins.

I roll my eyes.

"You're insane. Why would Xander want to marry me?"

"You're kidding, right?" She says.

I shake my head.

"Brin, you are amazing. You and Xander make a great team,"

"I don't know," I tell her honestly.

I love Xander. But am I a good fit for him? For this kingdom? I'm afraid that I will fail, and Xander will hate me for it.

"What kind of fundraiser?" Sister Mary Danvers asks.

"A carnival. We can host one every year to help raise funds and get the children adopted," I explained.

The sister shakes her head.

"The King will never approve of this,"

Katie laughs.

And I and sister Mary Danvers look at her.

Katie clears her throat.

"The King will approve of it. After all, Brinley," Katie pauses, pointing in my direction.

"Is the King's mate,"

Sister Mary Danvers looks at me and raises a brow.

"You said he was marrying the mother of the baby you always have with you,"

I nod my head.

"That's what his mother told me, and I believed her. But it turns out she lied, and he wants me as his mate,"

Sister Mary Danvers's feature softens.

"I'm glad to hear it. But are you sure the king will be okay with this?"

I shrug my shoulders.

"It shouldn't be a problem. I will speak with him tonight,"

The sister nods.

"Do you ladies want to stay and help us prepare lunch for the kids?"

"We'd love to," Katie and I say simultaneously.

Sister Mary Danvers smiles.

"Great, let us get it ready,"

*******

"May I sit with you?" One of the little boys asks me.

"Of course, you may," I tell him and pat the chair next to mine.

He climbs up onto the chair and places his napkin on his lap before taking a bite of his cheeseburger.

When he stops chewing, he turns back to me.

"My name is Axel. What's yours?"

I smile at him.

"Brinley,"

He nods.

"Nice to meet you, Brinley,"

"You, too," I tell him.

Katie and I stayed with the kids playing and helping out with bath and bedtime. Axel stayed by my side the whole time. He is so polite and a little gentleman.

He told me he had been with the sisters for as long as he could remember, and when I asked Mary Danvers about him, she also said to me that his parents didn't want him and gave him up at six months old.

I feel bad for all these kids, but more so for Axel, having been there the longest.

I sent Kelsy a text.

Ryder wants more kids, but Kelsy refuses to have anymore, so that I will tell her about Axel.

She said pregnancy wasn't her thing. But, honestly, I don't blame her.

*******

"Where do you ladies want this Carnival to be?" Kyle asks.

We are in the dining room having Dinner, and Katie told Xander about the fundraiser.

"In town," Katie tells them.

"I think it's a great idea," Xander tells Kyle.

"You do?" Kyle asks him.

Xander nods.

"It's a good cause to get some kids to new homes. Win, win," Xander tells him.

Kyle sighs.

"It is a good idea,"

Xander nods.

"It's an excellent idea. But, Brinley, I have a condition before I fully agree to this," Xander says, moving his attention to me.

"What's the condition?"

Xander narrows his eyes.

"You can't get over-stressed. Let Katie take care of most of the work, for Dominic's sake,"

I sigh.

Xander's right.

I don't want to put more stress on Dominic's fragile heart; maybe letting Katie take the lead is best.

I nod my head.

"I won't. Katie will be the lead on this, and it was her idea,"

Katie squeals.

"Thanks, Brinley. I have so many things to do, and we need to get to work tomorrow," She tells me.

"We need to write up a list and get everything booked, then make flyers and find some carnival food stands, the whole nine yards," She says, taking a breath.

"Breathe, Katie," Kyle grins.

She grins back at him and chuckles.

"I know. I am excited to be needed, and I need a break from Annabella. I love her, but I need me time," Katie tells Kyle, who nods.

"Katie, you know I'm always here if you need a few hours for yourself. I'll watch Anna,"

"I appreciate that,"

"Anytime,"

My phone starts ringing, so I take it from my back pocket.

Kelsy.

"I have to take this," I say, getting up from my chair and walking out of the dining room.
