Chapter 11
Three days later, James told me he’d pressured Ryan’s company until he agreed to divorce.

The condition was meeting me one last time at the civil affairs bureau.

fter some thought, I agreed.
To get the documents needed for the divorce, I had to return to what was once our marital
home.
The room had been cleaned spotless.
The floor gleamed, furniture perfectly arranged, everything in immaculate order.
The scenes of debauchery from that night seemed like just a nightmare I’d had alone.
After getting what I needed, I was about to leave when I heard movement in the living room..
I thought it was Ryan returning.
But when I walked out, it was Emma.
Seeing me emerge from the bedroom, her expression changed.
She deliberately covered her stomach, eyeing me warily: “Aren’t you divorcing Ryan? Why
are you back?”
“Don’t tell me you’re having second thoughts? I threw out all your stuff!”
“You’re pathetic, you know that? Ryan loves me now. Did you think not divorcing him would make him come back? You know what? We made love in that bed just last night!”
With Ryan gone, she dropped her innocent act completely.
She looked at me, laughing scornfully: “If I were you, I’d have slunk away from being Mrs. Carter long ago.”

“Seven years of marriage and not one baby to show for it – what kind of woman are you?”
Emma smiled sweetly, “I’m carrying his baby now, and he was so happy when he found out. He bought me an apartment upstairs, gave me a million dollars to celebrate our love! creating new life.”
“You know what Ryan says about you? He says seeing you sick scares him you’re like a mental patient. He says college girls like me are more fun, young and beautiful.”
gaze fell to her belly, my breathing suddenly constricted.
