Sawyer felt Maren shift on his back.

“Why are you carrying me?” Maren frowned slightly. She was relieved she had made it out safe, but there was still a hint of irritation in her voice. Being carried by him after he had knocked her out didn’t sit well with her.

“To save time,” Sawyer replied, gesturing at the forest around them.

“We’ve arrived?”

Only now did Maren notice the dense wall of green around them. They had entered a jungle.

The trees towered overhead, their trunks wide and gnarled. Ferns grew thick across the forest floor. Many of the plants looked unfamiliar. Some didn’t even seem native.

“We just reached the edge of the Kalman Jungle,” Sawyer explained.

“Put me down.” She slid off his back and saw he had been hauling

Six were young–men and women in light hiking gear. The last was an older man. They were carrying plenty of luggage and looked like they had been walking for a while.

Apparently surprised to find others here, they walked to Maren and Sawyer.

“Hi! Are you here looking for the savages too?” said the tall young man leading the group.

Maren and Sawyer exchanged a glance.

A girl with short hair stepped up beside the tall guy and grabb
