Maren wanted to ask what in the world was happening, but Sawyer leaned close and said in a low voice, “Pretending to be a couple makes them trust us.”

His logic checked out, and Maren had to suppress her dissatisfaction, nodding in agreement.

“Wow, they really look like a couple! Such a handsome guy and a beautiful girl!”

The group around them lit up, eyes bouncing between the two like they’d stumbled onto something rare.

“This spot’s perfect. Let’s set up camp here for the night. We’ll head out again tomorrow to look for the savages,” said a man who seemed to be calling the shots.

“Great! We’ll rest up and pick up the search in the morning. Once we find them, we’ll be famous for sure!”

“Eugene, our shot at internet stardom depends on you!”

They got started on the tents.

The tour guide, Eugene Wallace, had his own tent. The other six–four guys and two girls–paired off like this: three guys shared one tent, the couple took another, and the last girl set up alone.

As they worked, their talk stayed lively. Everything circled back to the savages.

Maren and Sawyer quickly figured it out. These were city kids chasing adventure, and they’d hired someone to guide them through the woods.

But were there really savages here?

Just then, the short–haired girl glanced over at them. “Hey, since we’re all looking for savages anyway, why don’t you guys join us?”

“Sure,” said Maren. Seeing that they had a guide gave her reason enough.

Having someone who knew the area was safer than wandering blind. The so–called savages they were after might be Nikolas and his crew. People who’d been living rough in a place like this for years wouldn’t look much

different.

“Yay, welcome to our team! I’m Tessa Young, and that’s my boyfriend, Luke Bennett. What are your names?”

“Maren Morgan.”

“Sawyer Warren.”

The group seemed overly enthusiastic for a first meeting, but nothing about them raised alarms.

Unlike Maren and Sawyer, who had packed only basic supplies, these folks looked more like casual campers. They even brought a barbecue grill.

Under the group’s warm invitation, the two joined in for food and drinks. The meat was hot, the air was easy, and the mood stayed light.

The three guys, not counting Luke, each took a turn offering Maren a drink, making up different excuses for it.

“May, you shouldn’t drink anymore. We have a long day tomorrow. Better get some rest.” Sawyer saw through their intentions without much effort. Stepping in, he took the drive for her and made the excuse for her to

leave.

“Okay.” Maren stood up and walking back to the tent.

“Sony, everyone. Maren doesn’t handle alcohol well. If she drinks more, she might sleep through the whole day

tomorrow. That would slow us down,” Sawyer said with

a polite s smile.

Though the three guys were clearly annoyed, they didn’t dare say much. After all, Sawyer was Maren’s

boyfriend. All they could do was watch in silence as se walked away.

Still, none of them planned on letting Sawyer slip away too easily.

He had drawn the attention of someone else too. Natalie Everett.

Natalie, the only other girl in their group besides Tessa, was pretty in her own right. From the moment they sat down for dinner, she hadn’t stopped talking to Sawyer. She kept pouring him drinks and leaning in closer,

which only stirred more jealousy from the three guys.

“Sawyer, how did you meet your girlfriend? She must have high standards, being that beautiful,” Neil Ashford
