Chapter 181 Childish
“You’re quite the entertainer, aren’t you?” Tessa and Natalie chuckled, stifling their laughter behind their hands. They could tell that Sawyer was joking.
His message rang loud and unmistakable: he might lack wealth or prestige, but Maren chose him regardless.
Inside the tent, Maren pressed her fingers to her temples in resignation.
“Why is Sawyer suddenly so childish?” she whispered, although a faint grin played on her lips.
Meanwhile, the trio who had been pestering Sawyer wore grim expressions. They saw only mockery in his
words.
To them, Sawyer was just a guy without status or resources. What–was–he acting proud about?
They were convinced he was using humor as a shield to dodge their question.
“Sawyer, I’ve still got something to ask.” The last of the three, Carlo Burns, wasn’t ready to let go.
“Sawyer, come in here. I can’t fall asleep without you by my side,” Maren called from the tent.
“My apologies, fellas. My girl’s used to dozing off in my arms. It’s getting late, so I’ll turn in now.” Without sparing another glance, Sawyer ducked into the tent.
The moment he stepped inside, Maren zipped it shut.
“You should ease off these kids a little. We still need their guide, and offending them won’t help,” she
whispered.
There was no way those guys could outplay Sawyer.
“They were harassing you. I just stepped in,” Sawyer answered simply.
“They won’t get me drunk anyway, so it doesn’t matter. Don’t stress about it,” Maren said as she settled down.
Getting coerced to drink didn’t faze her in the slightest–she’d heard worse and dealt with worse.
To her, those guys were merely temporary tools–nothing more.
But what felt insignificant to Maren meant everything to Sawyer. He couldn’t bear the thought of anyone
a move on her.

In his eyes, Maren belonged with him. No one else should even consider it.
“The guide seems important to you. Do you have a destination in mind?” Sawyer didn’t want to linger on the topic of feelings he could only keep to himself, so he shifted the focus, asking about Maren’s destination instead.
“I’m exhausted. Let’s just sleep,” Maren replied, shutting her eyes.
Sawyer wasn’t surprised. Pushing wasn’t in his nature. Protecting Maren was his sole reason for being here,

He lay beside her quietly.
The tent was tight–meant for one person–so with both of them inside, their bodies pressed naturally close.
Having her by his side made it the most restful night he’d had in ages.
The following day, the group rose early.
Once breakfast wrapped up, they began packing. The younger ones carried only what was essential.
Nobody brought heavy stuff like the grill this time.
“Mr. Wallace, where do the savages live? Any idea where to start looking for them?” Tessa asked, brimming with curiosity.
Scanning the area, Eugene pointed. “I’ve explored this place a lot. The last time I passed through, I noticed signs of them nearby. That’s our first stop.”
The girls and Luke cheered in unison.
The group set off on their journey.
Neil, Ethan, and Carlo had shared a tent that night–still reeling from their failed attempt to one–up Sawyer. The more they replayed the moment, the more it gnawed at them.
To them, Maren only called Sawyer back to give him an out. Their approach hadn’t been wrong—they just
needed a better plan. From the minute they set off again, they were brainstorming ways to make Sawyer look
foolish while making themselves shine.
Their chance came fast.
“Hey, are those coconuts?” Natalie’s voice broke the chatter.
Everyone glanced up to see a tall tree up ahead, the top littered with ripe coconuts.
“That’s uncommon. Coconut trees aren’t usually found this deep in the jungle,” Eugene noted as he walked.
Coconut trees tend to flourish in warm, coastal areas–shorelines and islands–where sunlight is abundant and the breeze carries a salty tang. Dense forests, in contrast, rarely offer such conditions.
“I’m all out of drinks. I don’t feel like drinking just water. Any chance we can get the coconuts?” Natalie asked
Eugene.
“I could go for something, too. They say coconut’s great for the complexion,” Tessa chimed in.
Eugene sighed. “No equipment. You’d need to scale the tree.”
Before either girl could find a way Ethan stepped up.
“I’ve got t
this!”
Eyeing the towering palm, which easily stretched past ten meters, he seized the opportunity. Finally–a
moment to shine.
“Ladies, allow me the honor–those coconuts will be yours in no time!” His glance lingered especially on Maren,

searching for a flicker of admiration. But she remained completely uninterested, as if his grand offer barely
registered.
Ethan felt a pang of frustration, but he wasn’t about to back down. He believed once he brought the coconuts
down, she’d be impressed.
