Chapter 215 A Strong Opponent
Morris‘ pointed jab didn’t go unnoticed. Nadia and Hannah caught it instantly, their faces stiffening at the memory of nearly munching on poisonous mushrooms during the last combat trial.
“Seriously, Morris? You’re laughing like you weren’t in the exact same boat,” Hannah said, visibly irritated.
If Maren hadn’t stepped in, they would’ve all been poisoned–no exceptions.
“Exactly. That’s why I was grateful to Maren. Some of you, on the other hand, take what you can from her, then turn around and talk trash,” Morris retorted, showing no mercy to Nadia and Hannah.
Getting to know Maren had opened Morris‘ eyes to how much she’d endured and how fake Nadia was.
Back when Nadia still wore the Morgan name with pride, Morris might’ve held his tongue. But times had changed, Maren now stood at the top, and Nadia was just another student pretending to matter.
“I expected better from you, Morris. Guess I was wrong. You’ve taken the wrong side, and you’re going to regret it,” Nadia said, finally dropping the nice–girl act.
“Whatever happens to me isn’t your business. Maybe you should start thinking about what’s coming your way,‘ Morris replied calmly before turning to leave.
Hannah snapped, “Don’t you dare walk away-”
”
“Let him go. He’s not worth it. Maren is the one we’re dealing with.” Nadia stopped Hannah with a hand on her
arm.
Morris‘ attitude didn’t bother Nadia in the slightest; she didn’t even think he deserved her attention. The one who truly mattered, the one she saw as a threat, was Maren.
“We’re all here. Time to move out.”
The students from the five academies assembled, waiting for instructions from Daniel and Trey before they headed to the competition zone.
Soon after, they arrived at a sleek private helipad where multiple helicopters were lined up, engines humming low. Daniel gave a quick signal, and the students began boarding in groups.
“Your destination is the Plaka Island–completely isolated. Once you’re dropped off, you’ll be on your own for over half a month. Your performance will be monitored and scored through drones, and your final rank will reflect your ability to survive and adapt,” Daniel explained seriously before they reached their destination. “There’s no backing out halfway. Even in a life–or–death moment, quitting isn’t an option. You’ll have to handle every part of survival yourselves.”
“Yes, sir!” the students replied in unison, their voices loud and ready.

Daniel gave a firm nod, clearly pleased. Despite how dangerous the trial was, a surprising number of students had signed up without hesitation.
As the choppers approached the Plaka Island, Trey moved down the aisle, handing out parachutes.
“Wait–parachutes? Sir, you mean we’re actually jumping? Like, on our own?” Hannah asked, her voice rising in
disbelief.
One glance outside was all it took. The island below looked miles away, swallowed by clouds.
A nervous breath caught in her throat. The thought of jumping made her stomach turn.
“Fear has no place in a soldier’s heart,” Daniel said, his earlier patience fading fast.
Hannah bit her tongue and lowered her eyes.
The rest of the group wasn’t any braver. Though they didn’t say a thing, their tense expressions spoke volumes.
A few students were clearly uneasy with heights, Nadia and Wilbur among them.
Only Maren remained still, calm, and focused, as if skydiving was just another task on her list.
“She always has to act like she’s perfect,” Hannah murmured bitterly, clenching her jaw.
But she kept her opinion to herself. The last thing she wanted was another lecture from Daniel.
The helicopter began to hover above the drop zone.
“Get ready. This is your stop,” Daniel called out, pointing toward the dense green landscape below.
From this height, the island looked lush and thriving. That gave some hope–maybe survival wouldn’t be as brutal as expected.
The sight offered just enough comfort to ease the tension in a few shoulders.
“I’ll go first.”
Without waiting for permission, Matthew stepped to the door, ready to jump.
Instinctively, the students near the door took a step back, wary of the open edge and the dizzying drop below.
“You’re Maren, right? I’ll give you this–you’re tough. But this time, I’m not losing to you,” said Matthew as he walked past her.
Without waiting for a response, he turned over his phone and gear as required by the rules, then stepped off the edge and jumped off the helicopter.
Yesterday’s encounter with Maren had shaken him, but it had also fired him up. He’d spent the night awake, not from nerves, but from sheer determination.
“He really jumped!”
The others rushed forward, crowding the doorway to catch a glimpse.
Matthew’s silhouette shrank quickly, then burst outward as his parachute deployed, guiding him to the coastline of the island.

Jumping into the island’s center was risky. The edges were safer, especially when you didn’t know what was waiting in the middle.
Clearly, Matthew knew what he was doing. He landed smoothly without incident.
“That was slick!” someone said, zooming in with their phone to get a better look. Matthew was already walking the beach like he owned it.
“Pressure’s on, Maren. He’s set the bar. You’re not thinking of backing out, are you?” Hannah teased, trying to get a rise out of her.
“You should focus on surviving the day,” Maren said flatly, glancing at the time. Afternoon was creeping in fast.
If she wanted to set up camp before nightfall, she had to move now.
That urgency explained why Matthew didn’t wait. Only those with no plan wasted time hesitating. Jumping early meant extra time on the ground to get ready.
Maren handed over her phone, strapped on her parachute, and approached the door, ready to jump.
