Chapter 230 She Was Volunteering To Die
“It’s still unclear if Maren went there by accident or deliberately,” Calvert said thoughtfully.
“Wait, Mr. Marshall. What are you trying to say? You really think Maren might’ve done this intentionally?”
another judge asked, puzzled.
Gerald immediately dismissed the notion with a disdainful snort. Only someone out of their mind would
willingly step into that beast’s territory–it could tear through a dozen students effortlessly.
He was already irritated by how the panel consistently favored Maren.
To him, this only confirmed that Maren had no real feel for the wild or how to read her surroundings. Why was
it so difficult for them to accept that Nadia was more excellent than Maren?
Of course, he kept these biting criticisms private, especially since Calvert had voiced the suspicion first.
“I’m not sure,” Calvert said, offering only a guess. Still, on the map, he had already marked the path Maren had
followed to reach this point. She’d taken the most direct path to reach that mountain. Clearly, the cave wasn’t
some accidental discovery, as Gerald stubbornly insisted.
“Finally, we made it. Honestly, Maren, aren’t you tired at all?” Standing within sight of the mountain’s base,
less than a hundred meters from the cave, Morris collapsed onto the ground, completely drained.
He was out of breath and dying of thirst, having finished off his coconut water hours ago. And now, he was left
with nothing to drink.
Meanwhile, Maren stood calmly beside him, breathing steady as ever, and Morris couldn’t help but feel utterly
inadequate.
“You should try building your endurance. Aren’t you supposed to be tougher?” Maren teased, casually tossing
a wild fruit into his lap. She’d spotted it along their route and tucked it away just in case.
“Wow, this tastes amazing!” Morris exclaimed, biting into the juicy fruit eagerly, savoring each sweet burst. Its
flavor surpassed anything Nadia’s team had found yesterday.
Not that it was a shock–Máren had a knack for being impressive.
Put him in that spot, and he wouldn’t even recognize which ones were safe to eat.
“Are we seriously heading over there now?” Morris asked cautiously once he’d caught his breath, glancing
nervously toward the ominous cave entrance.
“Maren, wait!”

But Maren was already striding forward purposefully before he’d even finished his sentence.
Scrambling to his feet, Morris hurried after her, unwilling to stay behind alone.
As they reached the cave, an unsettling silence enveloped them–not even insects dared make a sound.
“Why is it so dark? I literally can’t see anything.” Leaning in, Morris squinted, hoping to spot something inside. But the darkness swallowed everything–there was nothing to see. He gulped nervously. “We’re not actually going in without light, are we?”
They hadn’t even packed a flashlight, much less a torch. Going in at this point would leave them completely blind in the darkness.
“Relax. Let’s first check if anyone’s home.” Maren picked up a small stone and tossed it into the cave.
After three silent seconds, there was still no response from the cave.
Without hesitation, Maren grabbed a second stone and tossed it farther inside, this time with extra force behind the throw.
Again, absolute silence greeted them.
“Phew! Looks like nobody’s home.” Morris exhaled with visible relief.
“But how do we know it’s not just sleeping?” Maren wondered aloud, considering the possibility.
“Please don’t say stuff like that!” Morris shot her an anxious look, He preferred to stay optimistic.
“The second rock should’ve traveled at least ten meters. But it never made a sound. That means this cave runs deep–it’s definitely promising.” Maren knew she had picked the right place. “Want to come in and check it out?”
“What? Me?” Morris paused, unsure. Deep down, he had no interest in stepping into that cave, but part of him worried Maren would see it as cowardice.
“No pressure. You can always wait outside.” It was only natural to be afraid, and Maren wasn’t the type to fault him for that.
“Um, okay–I’ll guard the entrance then.” Morris took the hint and gave an awkward chuckle.
“I’ll be back quickly if it’s empty,” Maren said, stepping confidently into the cave’s darkness.
“What the hell is she thinking? Has she completely lost it?”
Inside the monitoring room, every judge leaped up from their seats in disbelief.
Only Gerald burst out laughing triumphantly. “Now that’s what I call reckless! That cave is a black bear’s lair-
I remember clearly. She’s practically delivering herself to death’s door!”
The judges exchanged worried looks, sighing heavily.
After Maren’s record–breaking performance in the shooting round, the higher–ups from the military had taken serious notice of her.
Before the second round even began, they were specifically told to keep a close eye on her.
Still, no one imagined she’d stroll into a wild animal’s cave like she had a death wish.
