Rosaline’s stern look silenced the student before he could continue, prompting him to quickly bow his head and

fall silent.

“We aim to shape future leaders here, not to coddle heirs who’ve never faced hardship,” Rosaline replied firmly.

No sooner had she finished her declaration than she spotted someone attempting to leave the room.

“Maren, where do you think you’re going? Participation in the field combat assessment is mandatory for all, including you!”

Maren stopped in her tracks. “My graduation is imminent. I shouldn’t need to participate.”

“You seem quite sure of yourself,” Rosaline retorted, her tone pointed, alluding to Maren’s recent challenge to the dean. “Nevertheless, you must attend. The academy’s policy is clear: absence from classes without a legitimate excuse leads to expulsion. Have you even kept track of how many classes you’ve attended?”

Originally, Maren had joined the academy merely to remain close to Wilbur. While he diligently attended every class, she often skipped out to plan various surprises and gifts for him, which led to her initial expulsion.

It was true Maren had hardly attended any classes at all.

“Alright, I’ll participate,” Maren responded, aware that Rosaline was watching her closely.

With her showdown against the dean only three days away, she wasn’t too concerned about a routine exercise affecting her preparation.

“If that’s all, I’m leaving now.”

“Make sure you’re back in thirty minutes. We leave then,” Rosaline called after her.

“Understood.”

The classroom fell silent as Maren exited. She stepped outside, filled her lungs with the crisp air, and made her way to meet Stormclaw.

Their meetings were secretive, necessitating discretion, so she went to the isolated quarters set up by the dean for Stormclaw.

The area was designed for utmost privacy and even the dean needed to make appointments to visit.

“Boss.” Stormclaw, who had been anxiously waiting since their last phone call, sighed with relief upon seeing her. He quickly prepared a pot of coffee and offered her a cup.

“Why? Worried I wouldn’t make it back?” Maren asked, settling into a chair and accepting the coffee.

“Really, who could possibly harm you?” Stormclaw gave a half–hearted chuckle, relieved to see Maren safe once more. Yet his expression quickly sobered. “I went out this time because of Marcus‘ death. You told me about the minefield incident. He was the one who navigated you there, yet he emerged unscathed and was even promoted. Last night, I had planned to confront that traitor during the race, but without a ticket, I couldn’t risk. exposing myself. I waited outside, hoping to catch him as he left, but he never appeared. Only this morning did I learn of his death…”

“I killed him.” Maren cut him off before he could finish.

“I had been investigating his murderer, and discovered it was a woman… Wait, it was you?”
