“If you’re set on this path, why don’t I step in and meet Maren first?” Carl suggested. “I’ll handle the initial contact, screen for any red flags, and once I’m sure she’s not a threat, I’ll bring her to you.”

“Just remember one thing–Maren belongs to me. Keep your intentions clean.” Shawn agreed, not without a warning.

He knew Carl wasn’t the type to chase women for fleeting pleasure. His interest leaned toward real substance and emotional depth. That was why he remained unattached.

“I’ve got no time for women who chase nothing but power or wealth,” Carl replied, his voice calm.

He had actually done his homework on Maren. He knew she’d gone from a bullied girl to someone strong and respected–and he admired her for it.

Still, if she ended up being another one of those women–glittering on the surface but shallow underneath, the kind who’d trade anything for access or status–he’d be disgusted.

“Alright then. But dig deep. Figure out if she’s connected to anything shady, especially international arms deals. And keep your eyes open for any major players backing her,” Shawn instructed, adding another task to Carl’s plate.

He had investigated the attack on the Williams family in Shueso Town and traced it to forces from Baimsa. He knew the mastermind was Maren, but he hadn’t uncovered the source of her arms supply.

That missing piece was enough to keep him cautious.

One shipment of arms wouldn’t be enough to bring down the Williams family entirely. It might cause disruption, but the real concern was who had provided that firepower in the first place. Anyone capable of moving weapons on that scale could easily turn into a long–term threat.

“Got it,” Carl said, already well aware of how dangerous this could get.

Three days passed. In Plalo, Maren exited the airport with a suitcase rolling quietly behind her. Rather than heading directly to the location arranged by the Williams family, she detoured toward a small roadside vendor

and bought two drinks.

“Been waiting long?” she said casually, tossing one of the drinks in his direction. “Here–cool off.”

“Well, look at that. You recognized me right away?” Sawyer said, pulling off his mask with a touch of amused surprise.

“After all the times you’ve shadowed me? I think I’ve earned the right to recognize your face by now.” Maren

He was telling the truth. Now that Maren had stepped out of the power game, the Warren family faced no real competition.

Because of that, his days had become painfully predictable.

Still unsure of her approach, Sawyer raised a brow. “And what exactly are you planning to do? Is this going to end with someone’s head on the floor?”

“That’s not the goal,” Maren replied, giving her head a slight shake. “We’ll get a read on the situation first. Killing them might not change anything.”

If eliminating Shawn were enough to dismantle the Williams family, she wouldn’t have hesitated. But if the outcome remained the same, it wasn’t worth the bloodshed.

“I agree with you. That’s exactly why I think killing them isn’t the smart move.” Sawyer reached into his bag and passed her a folder–notes and intel he had gathered since landing.

“All four of the Williams brothers are eligible to inherit,” Maren muttered after skimming the top of the file, immediately shelving any thoughts of killing Shawn.

Killing him would do nothing but clear the path for another brother to take his place.

Not only would that tactic be futile, but it would also close the door on any chance of negotiating with the Williams family.
