Chapter 36 Where Is She

Wilbur hurried over to Nadia, panic etched on his face. “Are you in pain?”

“I might be worn out, or maybe I twisted my ankle a moment ago,” Nadia explained.

Although her explanation sounded unstable, Wilbur accepted it at once. “We need to get you to the medical center.”

Nadia objected right away. “I can’t go, Wilbur. The assessment isn’t finished yet.”

Concern clouded Wilbur’s eyes. “That’s not important right now. Your ankle comes first.”

“I’m perfectly fine.”

Nadia had no plans to give up, believing glory was far more valuable. Besides, she was feigning injury.

“Maren escaped with the supplies. If we don’t chase her, Morris‘ team will claim them,” a teammate reminded Wilbur.

Morris Calderon was the most formidable student in the opposing alliance.

Wilbur retorted, “Can’t you see Nadia’s hurt? Forget the supplies!”

The student instantly lowered his gaze in fear.

“Wilbur, please don’t be angry. This assessment impacts our final rankings, so it makes sense people are worried,” Nadia intervened, drawing grateful looks from those around her.

Wilbur’s expression cased. “Then what do you think we should do?”

“Wilbur, Nadia, maybe you both should stay here and recover. The rest of us can handle the chase,” another student proposed.

“Thank you. That should work.” Nadia quickly agreed before Wilbur could object. She shot a quick signal to a woman in the group.

That woman happened to be Hannah, who had clashed with Maren repeatedly and got slapped by her in the classroom.

Because the assessment was crucial, Hannah had only treated her swelling briefly, leaving part of her face still puffy.

She caught Nadia’s hint and felt a surge of hatred towards Maren.

“All right, go after her.” Wilbur finally relented.

Leaving a few behind to protect Wilbur and Nadia, Hannah and the others dashed off to reclaim the supplies from Maren.

After running some distance with the supply box, Maren paused to reload her magazines.

“Maren, drop those supplies right now!” a voice shouted from behind her, letting her know the pursuers had finally caught up.

Using only the sound of his shout, Maren located the speaker and fired in one swift motion, knocking him out of the battle.

The gunshot left the group shaken, and they hastily dove for cover.

“We’ve got you cornered, Maren. Give us the supplies, and we won’t hurt you!” Morris shouted from behind a rock.

He had no clue how Maren could pinpoint their movements in such thick brush, but he wouldn’t risk showing himself again.

Suddenly, another shot rang out without warning.

The bullet smacked into Morris‘ hiding spot, sending bits of rock flying.

Morris froze in shock.

Speaking just once had been enough for Maren to figure out his location?

Back at the base, Alberto jumped up, saying, “This is remarkable! Absolutely fantastic!” Most well–trained soldiers struggled to shoot by sound alone. Yet somehow, Maren accomplished it like it was no big deal.

Fascinated by her sharp instincts, Alberto turned to Rosaline. “Pay close attention to Maren’s growth. She’s an

incredible asset.”

“Yes, sir,” Rosaline replied with an uneasy nod.

She felt uneasy about nurturing someone widely regarded as the academy’s biggest failure.

Would endorsing Maren destroy the academy’s reputation?

Rosaline couldn’t understand Alberto’s enthusiasm and continued doubting Maren’s abilities.

Meanwhile, Morris felt torn between confusion and disbelief.

“Isn’t she that so–called reject at our academy? How is she this good?” one of his teammates whispered.

“Ridiculous! If she’s supposedly a loser with aim like that, then what does that say about us?” Morris vented his anger. “Those fools at the academy must be out of their minds. I want to track down whoever spread those lies!”

He barely knew Maren, having relied solely on gossip to form his opinion of her.

One quick exchange had convinced him she was nowhere near a failure.

“Morris, Wilbur’s people are still on our tail. If they catch up, we’ll end up fighting on two enemies!”

A teammate’s urgent reminder snapped Morris back to reality.

Until now, he believed Maren would go down easily, letting him secure the supplies and then fully focus on

Wilbur.

The situation had changed. Beating Maren in a hurry looked impossible.

If Wilbur launched an attack from behind while they were stuck dealing with Maren, disaster would strike.

“Maren, how about joining forces?” Morris quickly offered, seeing cooperation as their only hope.

He knew she disliked Nadia, and combining their efforts against Wilbur’s group seemed logical.

Convinced she would side with him, Morris had no doubt Maren would accept his offer.

To his surprise, she responded coldly, “Not interested.”
