Chapter 85 No Harm Meant
“Does the truth even matter to you at this point?” Maren glanced up at Wilbur.
“Of course it does!” His emotions got the better of him, and his voice trembled. “We’re still engaged, Maren. If that’s really your past, how am I supposed to handle it?”
To him, nothing mattered more than her virginity, though he’d never openly admit it.
“You’re overthinking it. I’ve made myself clear: our engagement is called off. There’s nothing between us anymore.” Maren made it clear she was done.
Her bluntness only fueled Wilbur’s suspicions.
“Just tell me the truth, Maren,” Wilbur said. “Are you involved with Simon Miller or not?”
He was set on getting the truth out of her today.
“Huh? What?” Maren’s brows knitted tightly. “Why are you dragging Simon into this?”
Wasn’t she supposed to have rescued Simon?
She couldn’t begin to understand the twisted ideas people kept spinning about her.
“Oh, stop pretending, Maren. Everyone knows what’s going on,” Nadia chimed in smugly, moving closer.
“Really now? Go on, tell me exactly what you know,” Maren said with interest.
“Come on. We all know you’d never been in contact with people like Simon before your disappearance. Those years you spent in the underground–how could you have survived without someone’s protection? Sure, Simon took you in, but why would he do that for free? A beautiful woman like you must have offered him something in return, right? You can tell us, Maren. We’re your family. We won’t judge–even if you used to sell yourself.”
Nadia spoke as if she were just laying out the truth. She acted indifferent, but the look of disgust on her face told a different story.
Wilbur clenched his jaw tightly, veins bulging, but he held his tongue, anxiously awaiting Maren’s reaction. Only after Nadia had finished did Maren finally move.
Without a word, Maren rose and slapped Nadia hard across the face.
The slap was so hard, the sound echoed throughout the living room.
“Ah!” Nadia shrieked sharply.
“Nadia!” Wilbur jumped in shock; he hadn’t anticipated Maren would really hit her.
Rushing to Nadia’s side, Wilbur saw her cheek quickly swelling up. Clearly, Maren had put her full strength behind that slap.

<Chapter 85 No Harm Meant
“Maren, why did you hit me?” Nadia sobbed pitifully, swallowing her fury to maintain an innocent facade for
Wilbur.
“Maren, I didn’t mean to hurt you. I just wanted you to understand–we’re family. Wilbur, Dad, all of us–we
don’t care about your past.”
“Maren, that was too much!” Wilbur snapped, retrieving an ice pack from the fridge and handing it to Nadia.
“She meant no harm!”
From Wilbur’s perspective, Maren was lashing out because she had something to hide.
“No harm, huh?” Maren chuckled. “Well, I guess my slap was just as harmless then.”
“You…” Wilbur was furious. “I need the truth. What exactly is going on between you and Simon?”
“Why should that concern you? With my abilities, do you honestly think I need protection?” Maren responded
with clear contempt.
Wilbur had been furious at first, but hearing that, he paused.
She had a point.
After all, Maren had easily defeated Daniel, who was reputed to be as formidable as the leader of the Angels of
Death.
Compared to Daniel, Simon was insignificant.
Did Maren ever really need Simon’s help?
It seemed far more likely that Maren had protected Simon, not the other way around.
Perhaps they had all been mistaken in their assumptions.
“So there isn’t anything between you and Simon?” Wilbur asked cautiously.
“And when exactly did I say there was?” Maren said, lifting an eyebrow with a mocking look that showed just
how ridiculous she thought the accusation was!
“Good, that’s great news.” Wilbur exhaled, visibly relieved.
Suddenly, he realized it had all started from Bobby’s baseless gossip, and Nadia had deliberately stirred things
This thought left Wilbur feeling somewhat bitter towards Nadia.
“Nadia, didn’t I tell you Maren isn’t that kind of person? Stop jumping to conclusions.”
Of course, he only said that to regain favor in Maren’s eyes.
Yet those words made Nadia’s anger flare dangerously. She finally understood: Wilbur had begun to change
ever since Maren’s victory.
