The explosion had captivated everyone on Brooks‘ team. By the time they redirected their focus, Maren was

nowhere to be seen.

Brooks felt a surge of panic.

“They’ve escaped!” one of his associates exclaimed.

“No shit–I can see that! Just find them, now!” Brooks shouted, clenching his jaw. “Do whatever it takes, but

find them!“.

Marcus, Scorpion, and Tyler were dead. His father was still hospitalized. Brooks was determined not to fall

next. Today, Maren must be dealt with.

He reprimanded his people, urging them to form groups and search the area for any trace of Maren.

“We’ve set multiple traps–one will surely draw Maren out. It’s in your hands now,” Brooks instructed Kenny.

He was referring to the operatives deployed as bait to draw Maren into the open.

Logically speaking, since they couldn’t take Maren down even with concentrated firepower, scattering their forces now would only make them easier targets–picked off one by one. But Brooks chose to do it anyway.

Yet, this wasn’t a rash decision. Brooks understood that Maren and Sawyer were adept at utilizing the landscape and concealing their movements. Their skill in evading detection by positioning themselves out of sight had forced Brooks to select overwhelming numbers.

Despite this approach not yielding the desired result, it had successfully pushed Maren and Sawyer to withdraw.

As they retreated, they had moved more than a hundred meters away from where the confrontation began.

Such a distance was well out of the effective range of most handguns.

Now it was Kenny’s moment to shine.

“Keep out of the buildings. Conduct your search from the outside,” Brooks instructed his team.

A perplexed team member asked, “But how can we effectively search without entering the buildings?”

Brooks replied, “Just do as I say.”

He was determined to avoid the risk of his men being ambushed inside the buildings, where Kenny wouldn’t have a clear shot.

His strategy was to provoke Maren into action.

His people commenced their search starting with the buildings nearest to Maren’s last known location.

These buildings had been evacuated earlier as part of the ambush setup. If Maren was hiding, she had to be in one of these vacant structures. Following Brooks‘ directive, the search teams maintained their distance, scrutinizing the buildings from the outside without entering.

“Amateurs.”

Realizing that the search teams were merely surveying from outside and not entering the buildings, Maren quickly sensed that something was amiss.

Brooks might have believed his strategy was reliable, yet Maren viewed it as too staged, almost as if he were openly inviting her into a snare.

“Do you think there’s someone out there ready to shoot us?” Sawyer asked, half–smiling.

His inquiry seemed rhetorical since his tone suggested he was certain of the answer.

“It’s clear there’s no one close by. If someone’s out there, they’re probably a sniper, and not nearby,” Maren responded confidently.

Their progress this far indicated a lack of close–range gunmen. If there were enemies nearby, they wouldn’t have pursued them so persistently.

“Got any clues on the sniper’s location?” Sawyer asked further.

“Right back where we started,” Maren said, almost as if she had foreseen the question.

Sawyer’s eyebrow lifted. “That sure?”

“If there were forces ahead of us, they would’ve encircled us, not just pushed from behind. Their desperation to prevent our escape suggests their primary force, including the sniper, is likely behind us.”

Her quick analysis unraveled the ostensibly impeccable trap Brooks had set.
