Just then, I remembered Thomas. I dug through my nightstand to find the piece of paper with his number on it. I borrowed Brie's phone and called him. He didn't pick up so I left a voicemail.
"Hey, uh, Thomas, this is Noel. I have to come back for a bit and was hoping you could do me a favor. My train will come in tomorrow night and I was hoping I could crash with you until I can come back here. For about two weeks. Call me back if you can... please. This number is my roommates. Okay, talk to you soon... I hope... bye." I rushed out, feeling very awkward before hanging up the phone.
About 10 minutes later Thomas called back. He said he'd pick me up at the train station and was happy to let me stay! He was very excited and said he couldn't wait to see me and hear all about the school. I smiled before hanging up. I gave Brie back her phone and laid down on my bed. Here goes nothing.
I didn't sleep well that night so the next day on the train I was grumpy. I couldn't sleep on the train either because everyone was loud and the train was bumpy. Instead I watched the landscape change as it went by my window. It was mostly just snow covering everything but it was beautiful all the same.
I began to reflect on everything. Especially my grades and my relationship, or lack of, with Michael. My scholarship was important. It needed to be the most important thing to me. The scholarship provided me with schooling, housing, and even groceries. I couldn't mess this up. If I did then I would be back to having no hope for a better life.
I really liked Michael, being with him I felt safe. Thinking about him made me feel like there was a hole in my chest that seemed to grow the further away I got from the school. A subtle but dull ache. I felt like he cared about me, but it was hard to tell. The only time he ever touched me was when social graces demanded it, Like when I was on the ground and needed help up, otherwise he didn't make any moves to touch me. I found this very odd. He never yelped or said I shocked him but any time our skin touched he had to quickly hide a look of pain in his eyes. It made no sense to me.
Everything else all pointed to him liking me. We joked and picked on each other constantly. We made each other laugh and smile. He stood up for me against others and encouraged me. I would even catch him staring at me from a distance. But because he never made a move I was starting to think that maybe he just saw me like a younger sister figure or felt like he needed to hang out with me for Brian's sake.
I busted out laughing, "Well of corse I smell bad! I've been sitting on that train for hours! You wouldn't smell like roses either!"
Thomas leaned in again and scrunched his nose up, shook his head, and lead me to his car. He had a nice car. I don't know anything about cars but it was somewhat new and fast. He opened my door for me and took my bags, placed them in the back seat, then came around and got in the driver seat. He flashed his brilliant smile at me before taking off down the road.
I had been to Thomas's house several times but it still always amazed me. It was a very old, decently sized house on the edge of town. He had a few acres with it that he did absolutely nothing with, his property ended in the woods. The house was Victorian style, painted a creamy beige color with white trim. My absolute favorite part about his house was the tower. I loved the sit in the top section by the window and read.
