Yorick

‘Hey, where are you?’ Wendy’s asks in mind link. I’ve just spent the last couple of hours going over what’s been happening at the Academy with Connor, Quirin, and Henry. They’re ready to go straight to the Board and the Council, but I told them to wait.

‘My room. I’m about to get on a call with the Academy’s IT team. You want to join me?’ I ask. She’s done a lot of the prep work that has helped me get the information that I needed. If she wants to see where this is going, I’ll let her.

‘On my way,’ she says and a moment later there’s a knock at my door.

“Come in, Wendy,” I say as I dial into the meeting that Hacker sent me earlier. I turn making sure it’s her before turning back to my computer.

“Who’s Alpha Lane?” I ask.

“Henry really said something about him?”

“Sure did. You can expect Connor to ask about him later.”

“Ridiculous,” she murmurs.

“You dating this guy?” I ask, turning to her as I wait to be accepted into the meeting.

“No, it’s not like that.”

“Be careful, I know some IT guys. If I have to have them look into this guy, I will,” I say as the call connects.

“Yorick!” my mate says. I turn to see my mate’s worried face in the video.

“Cyra, are you doing okay?”

“Am I? Are you?” she asks, her fingers stroking over the computer. I’m guessing she’s reaching out wanting to touch my face, just as I want to touch hers.

“Who are we looking into?” Hacker asks.

“Some guy talking to my sister. This is Wendy everyone,” I say, introducing her.

“Hey,” she says and the group goes around the room introducing themselves to her.

“You’re the one who started all of this, huh?” Hacker asks her.

She shrugs, blushing slightly. “I looked into Jory and one thing lead to another.”

“Be careful Hacker. Wendy applied to the Academy. My sister’s smart enough to take any of your jobs,” I say proudly. “Thanks, Yorrie,” she says, obviously embarrassed.

When I look back at the screen, Cyra is smiling at me. She knows I’m close to Wendy, but now she’s seeing my interactions with my family firsthand.

“Okay, let’s get started,” Hijack says. “We’ve got the group up to date, and our confidentiality agreements signed.” “Agreements plural?” I ask.

“They found the alliance bond,” Cyra says. I can feel her tension even though I’m not in the room with her.

“We’ll go over that after we go over your issue with Alpha Leo, Yorick,” Hacker says, taking the lead on the call. “Alpha Leo has basically developed an alcohol and sex addiction that started after the death of his mate about six years ago. He was bankrupt when the first payment came through and he’s had one payment a year for the last five years.”

“Do we know who paid him and how much?” I ask.

“Yes, I’ve tracked everyone of them. We have the proof. It’s up to you and Cyra as our paying customers if and when you want to take this to the Board and the Council.”

“Today sounds good,” I growl.

“We can do that,” Hijack says, then glances at Wendy before looking at me. “I may have been tipped off by the searches your sister had already started. You need to be prepared for her to be called to court to testify,” he says.

I turn and look at Wendy. “What searches?”

“I started looking into Alpha Leo’s financials when things didn’t add up. But I came up against some firewalls that I couldn’t get past,” she says.

“You couldn’t, but I did,” Hijack says.

I stare at my sister.

“What?” she asks.

“Damn, sis. I knew you were smart, but I didn’t know you were that smart. You’re going to rival Kennedy for the brains in the family,” I tell her, making her blush a bright shade of pink.

She shoulder bumps me and smiles, pleased with my assessment.

“Seriously though, are you willing to go to court to testify, Wendy. I don’t want to do this if it’s going to cause you problems,” I say. It’s not worth it to me to get back to the Academy if facing the courts will hurt my sister.

“I can help you prepare for the court case, Wendy,” Tracker says. “If I hadn’t been accepted to the Academy, I was going to law school. I’ve used that information many times to make sure our team was prepared to face the Council and any other interrogators we might face.”

Wendy looks at me. “This is important Yorick. This is above you and I. Five candidates that deserved to attend that Academy weren’t allowed entrance because of one person. It has to stop. If Tracker is willing to help me prepare, then I want to do this for you but also for others who could lose their spots at the Academy if he is allowed to continue,” she says.

“Okay,” I say, turning back to the video. “That’s proof that Alpha Leo is dirty, but it doesn’t explain why he expelled me.”
