“Is something wrong?” Nicholas asked, looking confused. 

“You see, earlier…” Samantha began to explain. 

“What happened earlier was just an act,” Deborah cut in. 

“What?” the blond couple exclaimed in unison. 

“What are you talking about? What did I miss?” Nicholas looked around, bewildered. 

“Earlier, we were acting and arguing in public,” Jayden explained.

“Acting? But…” 

“Let us explain everything,” Deborah said, taking Jayden’s hand. “You see, everything we told you earlier and what happened today was a lie. We found out something concerning during lunch with Mr. George…

Jayden and Deborah had taken a seat at the table, deliberately positioning themselves far from Roger. 

James was playing with his hands, oblivious to the tense atmosphere around him. 

“Come on, Peterson,” Jayden said with a frown. 

“How rude,” Roger taunted, trying to provoke him. 

“Please, enough,” George interjected. 

Roger sighed and rolled his eyes. 

“Look, James,” Elliot showed a new rattle, which immediately caught the baby’s attention. James reached out his tiny hands to grab it. 

“Hehe, you’re already getting to know him,” Jayden remarked, seeing the excitement in his little one’s face as the toy made noise. 

“Yep, this is a new baby toy.” 

“You’re so lucky, my love,” Deborah said, smiling at James enjoying his new toy. 

“Um… Deborah,” Roger called her while offering a gift box. 1 suppose it’s the least I can do…” 

“What is it?” Jayden asked as Deborah accepted the box and opened it to reveal a child’s xylophone. 

“It’s cute… thank you, Roger. I know he’ll like it.” 

“Yes… um… I chose it because I saw it’s a popular toy for babies due to its colors and sounds.”

“No, this is just a side note,” Roger said with a grimace. “What I really wanted to tell you is that my mother came to talk to me again yesterday, accompanied by Sophia ”

“Hold on, Jayden,” Deborah said, “Tell me, do they have any connection to Marie Ward?”

“But we already knew about their delusions,” Elliot started. “What about this new person? What’s her deal?” 

“I can explain that,” Jayden said. “She’s an ex–girlfriend who seems to have returned to town and remembered my existence because her family is nearly bankrupt.” 

“What a fool… uh, I mean, how naïve,” Elliot quickly corrected himself, noticing his Deborah’s disapproving look 

“That’s what I thought,” Jayden admitted. “So, I had her investigated, and it turns out she believed I was still waiting for her.” 

“And it seems the three of them have teamed up to separate you,” Roger commented. 

“Typical” Deborah sighed and crossed her arms. 

“Of course, I refused, but they even suggested killing James just to destroy your happiness.”

“God… I think they should be locked up in a mental institution,” George said, visibly angry. “To even

“Hey!” Deborah, who was listening with amusement, protested. “And to make it seem like their plan is going well, Roger will pretend to be getting close to me again, and I’ll have a lapse of idiocy where I’ll want to return to his arms so James can grow up with his real dad and all that nonsense…” 

**Samantha stood up and gave both young people a light smack. 

“Ouch…” they both exclaimed. 

“Such mischievous and deceitful children. You lied to us.” 

“It was Jayden’s idea,” Deborah said, pouting. 

“It’s because, Mom… I didn’t want to tell you because you’re a terrible actress.” 

“Well… they do have a point, love,” Eric said. 

“My love, you’re being so mean… You’re supposed to be on my side.” 

“Wait… does this mean I have to pretend and be nice to this kid who hurt you?” Nicholas asked, frowning. 

“Don’t worry, that won’t happen,” Deborah said, looking him in the eye. “Roger knows he’s not James’s father.” 

“This sweet child is mine, but I’ll pretend to hate him to protect him, and I hope you’ll support us in this because we want to see how far they’ll go,” Jayden said.
