Jessica parted her lips, but ultimately couldn’t bring herself to tell him to stay.

Stella let out a quiet sigh but chose not to say anything more.

Jessica could make her own decisions. As her mother, she couldn’t interfere too much.

Jessica felt Stella’s understanding, and her heart softened.

She was doing well now. She truly didn’t want to look back.

When Jacob got home, Brian told him about Madeline’s phone call.

“Huh? Maddie called me? How come I missed it?”

As Jacob said this, he looked down at his watch, only then realizing it had run out of battery at some point.

“It’s all my fault. I forgot to charge it! Dad, did Maddie say anything? Like, how did Mom react to the lemon scones?”

Jacob gazed up at his father, eyes full of hope.

Brian couldn’t bear to dash his son’s hopes, but he didn’t want to lie to him either.

He said gently, “No, she and your mommy had a little disagreement. Jake, from now on, don’t trouble Maddie to deliver things to your mommy anymore, okay?”

Brian just didn’t want Jake’s innocent actions to upset Jessica again.

Jacob blinked in confusion.

“But why?”

Jacob thought to himself, “But weren’t Maddie and Mommy getting along just fine?”

“Why so many questions? Maddie has to work, so don’t keep bothering her,” Brian said, his tone gently dismissive.

He had no intention of explaining the subtle dynamics between adults to his son, so he simply used her job as a convenient excuse.

Though still confused, Jacob trusted his dad and nodded obediently, deciding not to ask any more questions.

Brian let out a sigh of relief.

Early the next morning, Brian brought Jessica the soup he had made.

After they met, he didn’t say a word about Madeline the entire time.

Jessica couldn’t help but be surprised.

She couldn’t believe Madeline wouldn’t go crying to Brian after getting slapped by her.

Yet now, Brian knew full well that Jessica had slapped Madeline yesterday, but today, he still brought her breakfast as if nothing had happened. It was downright bizarre.

Finishing the last sip of soup, Jessica set down her bowl and initiated, “About Madeline…”

But before she could speak, Brian cut her off.

“Don’t mind her. I’ve already told Jake not to have her bring you things anymore, I wouldn’t want you to get upset, Brian said.

Jessica was stunned speechless.

She had never expected Brian to say that.

She looked up at him meaningfully. Then, she said casually, “Do as you please.” Without another word, she opened the door and stepped out.

Anyway, they were getting divorced. Whatever happened between Brian and Madeline was none of her business.

Brian instinctively reached out to hold her back, but his hand froze in midair. In the end, he could only stand there once again, silently watching her walk

away.

At Atkinson Group, Madeline had deliberately applied makeup to accentuate the slap mark on her face, waiting along Brian’s usual route. Yet he walked right past without so much as a glance, leaving her seething with frustration.
