“Got nothing better to do?” Jessica snapped.

“Not at all. Mr. Atkinson just assigned me two major projects to cut my teeth on. I’m practically drowning in work! Sometimes I really envy how carefree you are, Jessi.”

Madeline’s sickly sweet voice made Jessica’s stomach churn.

She quickly patted her chest, barely suppressing the urge to vomit right then and there.

“Cut the crap. Either state your business, or I’m hanging up.”

Jessica decided not to torment herself any longer and moved to end the call.

“Come on, Jessi! Let’s have a little chat. I still remember when I first joined the company. I didn’t even know how to print a document, and you were the one who taught me everything.”

Madeline continued, “Now look how far I’ve come. I’m leading projects on my own. Though of course, I’ll never measure up to you, Jessi.”

Madeline sighed dramatically.

Jessica frowned, wondering what on earth Madeline was up to.

Madeline suddenly asked, “Jessi, do you still remember the Propian Group project?”

Naturally, Jessica remembered. It was the last project she’d been in charge of before leaving Atkinson Group.

Unfortunately, she’d barely gotten it off the ground when she had to resign for personal reasons and hand it over.

“So Brian dumped the project on you?” Jessica sneered.

“How trusting of him.”

Madeline smiled sweetly, with a hint of flattery, “Well, yes. After all, you personally trained me, Jessi. Mr. Atkinson has always had great confidence in your abilities; he even said that if I ever got stuck on the project, I could reach out to you for advice.”

Flipping through the rejected proposal yet again as she spoke, Madeline cursed inwardly, “Damn Propian Group and their endless nitpicking!”

When Atkinson Group and Propian Group first collaborated, Propian Group signed off on Jessica’s plan the moment she presented it.

Now, in their second collaboration, Madeline had already submitted her third draft proposal. She considered it flawless, yet Propian Group kept rejecting

They’d just say it was “lacking something” without specifying what, and they even had the nerve to ask if she could consult the previous project lead.

Madeline maintained her professional smile, but inside, she was seething with rage.

“That’s the situation. Propian Group still thinks my proposal isn’t thorough enough, so I wanted to get your opinion, Jessi. After all, you were the one who first led this project.”

Jessica almost burst out laughing–and she did./

She asked, “Madeline, even if this were still my project–which it’s not–I’ve been gone for years. Why on earth would your problems concern me?”

“Come now, Jessi, don’t be so cold! After all, you trained me yourself. I’m practically your protégé. Can’t you do your own student a little favor in private?”

Madeline said with shameless flattery.

She was really sick and tired of tweaking the proposal any further.

If she could get a free plan out of Jessica, that’d be perfect. If not, she might as well get under her skin.

Jessica was thoroughly disgusted by her.

“Madeline, let me remind you—just behave yourself. We’re at different companies now, on opposite sides. If you disclose your company’s major project

to me without authorization, that’s a serious breach of confidentiality. It grounds for immediate termination.”

Sometimes, Jessica thought to herself, ‘What the hell possessed me to ever believe Madeline was worth mentoring?”

Madeline hadn’t expected such a blunt response. She gritted her teeth, barely able to contain her fury.

“Must you draw such a hard line, Jessi? Mr. Atkinson would be heartbroken if he knew.”

Madeline pressed on, unwilling to give up.

Jessica sneered, “Well, isn’t that just perfect for you to move in on him?”

With that, she slammed the phone down.

She shouldn’t have wasted her time answering that call.

Madeline stared at the disconnected call, her face twisted with rage.

She cursed inwardly, ‘Damn Jessica! Cut the act!‘
