As Wesley carefully explained her assessment, Jessica fell into a heavy silence, the weight of his words settling over her.

Wesley studied Jessica’s silence for a moment, then asked gently, “Would you like to talk about it?”

Letting out a weary sigh, Jessica slowly began to pour out what had been weighing on her heart lately.

Wesley listened patiently. When Tres trotted over, he thoughtfully handed her to Jessica, who was visibly distressed, hoping to help calm her nerves.

Jessica held the cat in her arms, idly stroking its soft, glossy fur. As she did, she felt the tension in her body slowly melt away.

Wesley observed Jessica’s visibly relaxed posture, a glimmer of satisfaction flashing in his eyes.

This was how a patient should be during therapy.

Before she knew it, over an hour had slipped by. Holding the third glass of warm water Wesley had poured for her, Jessica began to feel slightly uneasy.

She said apologetically, “Sorry for unloading so much negativity on you again.”

Wesley shook his head with a gentle smile. “Ms. Grant, you’re being too polite. As your therapist, helping you process these difficult emotions is exactly

what I’m here for.”

Jessica was amused by his words, letting go of her insistence on thanking him.

Stroking the cat’s back, Jessica asked with a frown, “Dr. Finch, do you have any suggestions to help ease my current condition?”

Wesley set down the medical record, interlaced his fingers on the desk, and said solemnly, “There are certainly solutions. Based on what you’ve described, Ms. Grant, the deterioration in your condition is likely due to your pregnancy and excessive work stress.

“If possible, I’d recommend you get away for a while to relax.”

Jessica lowered her gaze. “Take a break? I wish I could, but I just got back to work, and this is a crucial time for me to establish myself. My workload is overwhelming right now–I truly can’t afford to take any time off.”

If only she could get away from it all. But reality just wouldn’t allow it.

Wesley frowned. “Ms. Grant, don’t you think you’re pushing yourself way too hard?”

He found it exhausting just watching her.

Jessica shook her head. “I’m alright, really. Let’s just leave it at that. Thanks for talking with me, Dr. Finch. I do feel a bit better now.”

With that, she handed the cat back to him.

Seeing Jessica’s defenses go back up, Wesley knew the session had failed.

“That’s good,” Wesley said. “But I strongly suggest you consider my proposal.”

Jessica gave a faint smile, deliberately sidestepping his suggestion as she took the initiative to schedule their next session.

Jessica said, “I’m free next Wednesday and Sunday. I’d like to come by on both days. Would that be convenient for you, Dr. Finch?

Jessica was never one to shy away from treatment. The moment she noticed something was off with her emotions, she made up her mind to seek help and work through it.

“You’re certainly welcome here. But forgive me for being blunt, Ms. Grant. In your case, psychological counseling can only address the symptoms, not the root cause. Your heart is broken.”
