“What?”

The young nurse looked down at him in surprise.

Jacob explained, “My dad said my mom needs to rest, so could you please keep your voice down? Please? I’m begging you.”

As he spoke, he crossed his fingers and nodded politely toward the nurse.

The nurse was utterly charmed by his adorable behavior, her maternal instincts kicking in.

She immediately lowered her voice to match his and whispered back, “Alright, I promise. You’re Jake, right? Don’t worry, sweetheart. With such a caring child like you, your mommy will surely get better in no time.”

“Uh–huh!” Jacob nodded eagerly and thanked the nurse again.

Jessica witnessed the scene, her heart filled with a surge of mixed emotions.

When had Jacob ever been this considerate toward her? Forget reminding the doctors and nurses. Back then, Jessica would have counted herself lucky if he didn’t thrown a fit and insisted on leaving every time she had a checkup.

Jacob turned to meet Jessica’s gaze, immediately growing uneasy. “Mommy, why are you looking at me like that? Did I say something wrong?”

Jessica suddenly realized she’d been staring at him silently for quite a while. She quickly averted her gaze and said coolly, “No. You’ve seen me. I’m fine.

“If there’s nothing else, go back. It’s not even the weekend.”

Jacob’s face paled with anxiety as he hurried to explain, “Mommy, I didn’t skip class! I had Dad get permission from my teacher in advance.”

He anxiously turned to Brian. “Daddy, tell Mommy, quick!”

Brian gave his son a reassuring look, then said gently to Jessica, “Don’t worry, Jessi. I’ve already arranged his leave.”

“Why should I care? If he slacks off in school, that’s not my problem,” Jessica shot back coldly.

“Mommy…” Jacob whimpered pitifully.

When she didn’t respond, he immediately fell silent, not daring to say another word.

After a moment, Jacob gingerly placed the snacks he’d brought on the bedside table and whispered softly, “Mommy, get some rest. I’m heading back to school now. I’ll come see you again soon.”

Before leaving, he nervously bit his lower lip.

“Mommy, don’t worry. I promise I’ll study really hard from now on, I won’t let you down again.”

With that, before Jessica could respond, Jacob swung his backpack on and bounced away.

Jessica watched him disappear behind the hospital room door, her fingers unconsciously curling slightly.

Stella exchanged a glance with Dereck, seeing profound helplessness mirrored in each other’s eyes. When their gazes shifted to Brian, who stood as rigid as a statue by Jessica’s bedside, they felt even more emotionally drained.

“Jessi,” Stella said gently, “your father and I will head back now. Get some rest, and call us if you need anything.”

In the end, Stella decided it was best not to get involved. Sometimes, out of sight really was out of mind.
