Before he could finish, Jessica wrenched her hand free and tried to leave. She didn’t know why Brian thought he had the right to yell at her.

“Jessi, don’t go. I’m sorry!” Brian hugged her tightly, ignoring the stares in the lobby as he kept apologizing,

“Sorry, Jessi. I shouldn’t have yelled. I didn’t mean to- I was just so worried. I’m terrified something might happen to you.” Brian rested his chin lightly on the top of her head.

“Jessi, I’m truly sorry. I don’t ask for forgiveness, but can you call me next time something’s wrong? Treat me like a driver, a chef, a servant–anything. 1 just want you to take care of yourself. Jessi, I’m so scared.” His voice gradually choked up.

Jessica wondered in shock, ‘Is Brian crying? Does he really care about me that much?‘

“Don’t look at me, I must look a mess right now, and I don’t want to scare you. Jessi, please–promise me?” Brian said, reaching for the pharmacy bag in

her hand.

“What’s wrong this time? Tell me, and we’ll figure it out together. Don’t be afraid–I’ll do whatever it takes to make you better,” he added, already mentally listing every doctor he knew.

Still in his arms, Jessica said, “I’m not sick. Just a little short of breath. The doctor said it’s normal with twins, so you don’t-“.

She suddenly stopped. She’d almost tried to reassure him. Jessica was annoyed by her own instinctive reaction. She didn’t think Brian deserved her

concern.

Brian pressed her firmly against his chest. “Thank God you’re okay.” He’d been terrified.

Listening to his rapid heartbeat, Jessica felt a flicker of warmth. Brian was genuinely worried. He did care about her.

Thinking this, she said, “I’m perfectly healthy. The babies are already moving.” This was the first thing she’d wanted to tell Brian when she felt the fetal movement, and she’d finally said it.

“Our babies are moving?” Brian asked excitedly.

Jessica instantly snapped out of her momentary softness. She thought, ‘So this is all for the children.‘

Then she seized on another point. “How did you know I was here?” she demanded.

She hadn’t gone to the hospital near Atkinson Villa but the one closest to her apartment–no way this was a coincidence. And Brian had rushed in like he’d known exactly where to find her.

Brian stiffened. Jessica took the chance to push him away. “Brian, are you spying on me?” She stared at him, watching for the slightest reaction.

“Of course not,” Brian said quickly. No matter his reasons for assigning a bodyguard, if Jessica found out, their relationship would deteriorate further. was already fragile enough.

“Then how?” Jessica pressed. She didn’t believe him. This couldn’t be a coincidence.

Brian’s mind raced, and he suddenly remembered a detail from the bodyguard’s report.

“I paid your building’s security guard to keep an eye on you. He calls me the second he notices anything wrong. I’m sorry, Jessi–I know it’s wrong, but I was so worried,” Brian said.

This explanation visibly relaxed Jessica. Brian/sighed in relief, silently apologizing to the innocent security guard and planning to send compensation

later.

“Mr. Atkinson, how clever of you,” Jessica sneered. No wonder the guard had acted strangely when she left–he’d been bought off.

Brian smiled bitterly. “Jessi, must you think so poorly of the?” He’d assigned the bodyguard purely to protect her, ordering them to keep a distance and respect her privacy.

“Do you actually think you’re a good person, Mr. Atkinson?” Jessica scoffed.

“I’m not claiming to be a saint, but I truly just want to be good to you,” Brian said wearily. He wanted to be the kind of person who could take care of Jessica in every way without making her hate him.

Jessica wasn’t listening. “Spare me. You’re doing all this for the babies. Give it up–I’ll never let you take them from me. They’re mine!”

She’d already lost Jacob; she wouldn’t surrender these two.

Brian didn’t understand why she misunderstood him so deeply. “That’s not true–you’ve got it wrong. I care about the babies, but I care about you

more!”
