She mentally cursed Brian dozens more times.
She thought,‘ This is all his fault. People say the best exes might as well be dead. Why couldn’t he manage that? Why does he have to keep showing up in my life again and again?‘
Wesley nearly sighed as he watched her clearly sink back into her emotions.
He’d already suggested other methods, but she wouldn’t listen.
In the end, Wesley could only chat with her, trying to ease her mood.
Once the counseling session wrapped up, Jessica stood to leave.
Since Wesley had nothing pressing, he volunteered to escort her out. She didn’t care either way, so she didn’t decline.
Wesley accompanied her all the way to the elevator. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a woman clutching a resume lingering around the corner, and his gaze lingered.
“What is it?” Jessica caught his stare and followed his line of sight, feeling a jolt of recognition.
She thought, ‘That woman looks just like Madeline.‘
“Do you know her?” Wesley asked, picking up on her odd reaction.
Jessica watched as the woman disappeared into another office for an interview and shook her head. “No, she just seems familiar. Probably a coincidence.”
She thought, ‘Madeline should be overseas. There’s no way she’s here interviewing.‘
Wesley nodded and dropped the subject. He waited until she stepped into the elevator, then headed back to his clinic.
“Is he a psychologist?” Madeline asked the receptionist, having seen him enter the clinic.
When Jessica had looked over earlier, she’d nearly panicked but managed to duck into a nearby company, chatting her way out of suspicion by pretending to ask for directions.
“Totally. That’s Dr. Finch. He’s a huge deal around here. Not only is he a psychologist, but he runs the whole clinic. He’s loaded and good–looking. Half the girls in this building have a thing for him!” The receptionist practically gushed at the chance to talk about Wesley.
“I see. Thanks.” Madeline nodded, eyeing the clinic across the hall.
She thought, ‘Jessica’s seeing a shrink. This changes everything.’
A smirk tugged at her lips as she made a beeline for the clinic.
She thought, ‘I need to find out what ailed Jessica. I can use the information to push her over the edge.‘
‘Don’t take it personally, Jessica. Blame Brian. He shouldn’t still have been hung up on you after the divorce.‘
“Hi, is Dr. Finch available?” Madeline approached the reception desk with a troubled look, her voice soft.
“Yes, ma’am. Do you have an appointment with Dr. Finch?” the receptionist asked politely.
Madeline shook her head. “No, a friend recommended him. She said Dr. Finch is amazing at counseling. I’ve been struggling with insomnia and anxiety lately, and I suspect I might be depressed, so I wanted to see him.”
