“Hello, Dr. Finch,” Madeline said as the receptionist ushered her into Wesley’s office
“Hi, have a seat.” Wesley gestured to the chair, his eyes briefly scanning her familiar clothing
He wondered, isn’t this the woman I noticed earlier when walking Jessica out? Didn’t she go to an interview across the halfway?”
Madeline settled confidently into the chair opposite him, glancing at the glass still on the table.
She thought, “That must have been Jessica’s
“Dr. Finch, I actually saw you outside earlier,” she began, taking the lead. “The way you spoke to your last patient was so professional. You instantly come across as someone reliable.”
Wesley’s suspicion lessened slightly at her willingness to mention the earlier encounter.
He asked, “Thanks for the compliment. Did you come specifically to see me today, or was this a post–interview mental health check?”
“A bit of both. I’ve heard a lot about you but never had the chance to visit. Since my interview was nearby, I thought I’d drop in,” Madeline said with a hint
of sadness.
Wesley observed her micro–expressions and body language after she sat, frowning slightly.
He thought, ‘Just from observation, this woman doesn’t seem to have psychological issues. She looks more like she’s lying to hide something
Though he thought this, his expression remained calm as he asked, “Do you think you have mental health problems? Why do you say that? Have you had any symptoms?”
Instead of answering, Madeline probed tentatively. “Um… Dr. Finch, could I ask about your last patient first?”
“No misunderstanding, but I wonder if my situation might be similar to hers. I’d like to hear a general idea of her diagnosis.” She gave him an apologetic
smile.
Wesley raised an eyebrow. “Do you know her?”
Madeline quickly shook her head. “No, never saw her before today.“)
“Then what makes you think your situations are similar?” Wesley asked, his sharp eyes locking onto her.
Madeline instinctively evaded the question, delivering the rehearsed line.
She said, “I could tell by her expression. Recently, when I look in the mirror, I often wear the same look. Dr. Finch, just give me a rough idea. I promise! won’t breathe a word to anyone.”
She added, “If it matches my symptoms, I’ll sign up for sessions right away and keep coming here.”
But Wesley didn’t waver. “Sorry, patient confidentiality is non–negotiable.”
Madeline’s eyes cooled. “Dr. Finch, how is that confidential? I’ve heard many doctors share success stories as promotions.
“That woman seemed approachable. She’d probably have no issue with you discussing her case.“.
“I take issue with it,” Wesley said bluntly with cold eyes, noting she’d been dodging her own symptoms. “If you’re not here to discuss your condition, please leave. I have other patients waiting.”
He didn’t think she had come for a real consultation.

Chapter 257
“I’m not refusing to talk. I just need a point of reference to feel more certain. Can’t you see where I’m coming from?” Madeline said, prating on a sad ton
Wesley stayed firm. “That’s not how we do things here. If you can’t trust me, I’d suggest consulting another professional?
Seeing Wesley’s resolve and fearing she’d arouse more suspicion, Madeline stood up, disappointed.
She said, “Alright, I’ll have to think about it. Sorry to have disturbed you today.”
As she turned to leave, she fumed silently. ‘Why does everyone shield Jessica like this? Did she put a spell on them?”
Though striking out with Wesley, Madeline gained one key insight–confirming Jessica’s mental health struggles.
She thought, ‘The day wasn’t a complete waste.’
As soon as Madeline departed, Wesley grabbed his phone to contact Sana.
He’d noticed the distinct aversion in Madeline’s eyes when she’d mentioned Jessica–far from the reaction of a stranger.
He wondered, ‘Was it truly a coincidence that she arrived shortly after Jessica? Or had she been trailing Jessica, spotted her visiting my clinic, and posed as a patient to scout for her vulnerabilities?
A storm of thoughts raced through his mind before Sana picked up.
“Wesley, are you already missing me?” Sana’s s voice was as upbeat and playful as always.
“Not really. Your boss was just in my office again,” Wesley said flatly.
“Jessi came to see you? What did
you
discuss?
Is
her condition improving?” Sana’s tone turned serious at the mention of Jessica.
“No, that’s not why I’m calling. I just met someone intriguing and thought you might have info on her.” Wesley didn’t delve into Jessica’s situation.
“Intriguing? Don’t tell me you’re charming someone new,” Sana teased.
Wesley sighed, exasperated.
Ignoring her banter, he probed. “During Jessica’s last marriage, besides her terrible husband and son, was there anyone else who seriously stressed her out?”
