Inside the room, Stella sighed as Jessica’s silhouette vanished from her phone screen’s reflection.

If she hadn’t happened to glance at her phone just then, she probably wouldn’t have noticed Jessica coming at all.

Jessica trudged back to her apartment in silence. At her doorstep, she found several snack bags.

Recognizing the logo, she whipped around, scanning the area, but saw no one.

“Did he drop these off and leave?” she said to herself.

‘Or did he use a delivery service?‘ she wondered.

She didn’t bother to find out. She picked up the bags, tempted to toss them, but couldn’t be bothered to go downstairs. Instead, she brought them

inside.

She opened a pack, and the mouth–watering smell wafted up.

Her stomach growled, but after a moment’s hesitation, she pushed the bag away.

She scooped up Pancake, who’d bounded over, and hugged the warm, furry dog close. The simple comfort helped lift her spirits.

After a while of petting Pancake, Jessica finally felt like herself again.

But that night, she was jolted awake by a nightmare again and lay staring at the ceiling, unable to fall back asleep.

Thankfully, it was Saturday the next day, so she didn’t have to drag herself out of bed early.

In the morning, Stella arrived at Jessica’s apartment carrying grocery bags and found her still in bed, Hoping she’d finally gotten a restful night’s sleep, Stella was startled to see Jessica looking even more exhausted than before.

“Jessi, did you stay up all night?” Stella asked, guiding her to sit on the sofa with a worried frown.

“Yeah, just work stress,” Jessica mumbled, forcing a weak smile. She had no intention of telling Stella about the recurring nightmares.
