Jessica didn’t agree or refuse.

Wesley didn’t press further, wary of triggering her rebellious streak and making things worse.

Instead, he shifted to a lighter topic. “Heard you adopted a golden retriever recently? How’s it going?”

“Great. Pancake is really obedient. Every time I get home, it waits by the door and nuzzles me. I’ve been teaching it to shake paws lately.” Jessica’s mood brightened noticeably as she talked about her pet.

Wesley chimed in, “Oh? How’s the training going? Has it mastered it yet? Pancake is such a cute name.”

“Almost. It’s smart. When I’m in a bad mood, just hugging it helps me calm down,” she said with a smile.

Wesley knew suggesting a pet had been a good move.

They chatted about pet care details, during which Wesley quietly assessed her mental state.

Unaware, Jessica chatted animatedly,’ still engaged when it was time to leave.

Wesley took the opportunity to suggest another visit soon, and she agreed.

After saying goodbye and stepping out of the clinic, she suddenly remembered what Sana had mentioned.

She scanned her surroundings but saw no one suspicious.

‘Maybe she’s given up,‘ Jessica thought, pressing the elevator button absently.

But as she entered the elevator, a sharp feeling of being watched hit her.

She looked up instinctively, locking eyes with Madeline’s malicious stare through the closing doors.

She reached for the open button, but it was too late.

Jessica’s face turned icy cold. She thought, ‘So Madeline hasn’t gone abroad, and she’s been stalking me. What does she want?‘

Meanwhile, on his way back from a partnership meeting, Brian spotted a snack shop with a long line by the roadside and told the driver to stop. “Pull

over here.”

The car halted, and the driver watched as his boss, dressed in a 100–thousand–dollar custom–tailored suit, joined the queue outside the small store.

It was a sweltering June day, and even the morning sun was intense. Brian broke into a sweat within minutes, but he didn’t mind.

As soon as he reached the front of the line, he asked the shop assistant to wrap up several desserts he knew matched Jessica’s tastes.

Back in the car with the bag, Brian instructed the driver, “Turn around. Go to Grant Group.”

The driver didn’t hesitate, making a U–turn toward the building.

He arrived just as Jessica was returning from the psychology clinic.

Brian, who had been about to go upstairs to find her, immediately grew worried. “Jessi, why are you coming to the office so late today? Did you not sleep well last night?”

“Not your concern,” Jessica snapped without looking back, brushing past him.

Chapter 266

Brian sensed the hidden anger and wondered, ‘What have I unknowingly done to upset her this time?‘

As she walked by, Jessica’s eyes involuntarily glanced at the food bag in his hand. ‘It smells delicious,‘ she thought.

Brian noticed her look and hurried after her. “I bought you desserts–all your favorites. Just try them, okay?”

He decided to let her anger slide for now. Honestly, he hated upsetting her, but it often felt like he was the root of her irritation.

“Take them away.” Jessica averted her gaze and kept walking.

She thought, ‘I’m definitely not tempted.‘

She’d memorized the shop’s name and could easily order delivery later. ‘I don’t need his gestures,‘ she thought.

Brian didn’t listen, trailing after her.

Annoyed by the footsteps behind her, Jessica spun around and slapped the hand holding the bag.

Brian flinched but gripped it tighter.

Jessica grew increasingly annoyed by his obstinacy. “Brian, what’s the point of this?” she demanded irritably.

That confirmed Brian’s hunch that her sudden anger was directed at him. “Jessi, what did I do to upset you?” he asked, clearly bewildered.

“You know damn well what you did,” Jessica sneered.

She thought, ‘How could he act so caring while still being mixed up with Madeline? How could he be so shameless for the sake of the babies?‘

Brian looked even more confused. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Taking a deep breath, Jessica decided to give him one final chance. “I haven’t seen Madeline in ages. Any idea where she is now?”

Brian wasn’t expecting her to bring up Madeline. He hesitated briefly before replying, “She left the country. I fired her a few weeks ago. She said she was going abroad to start over. It must be two weeks since she left.”

Instead of reassuring Jessica, his explanation only made her angrier.

She opened her mouth to snap back, then thought better of it. Shooting him a venomous glare, she spun on her heel and walked away.

She thought, ‘He’s still lying to me. Does he really think I’m that stupid?‘

“Jessi, wait,” Brian called after her.

“Leave me alone,” she barked, whirling around.

Brian froze in his tracks. Jessica dashed into the elevator and slammed the close button.

Standing there as the doors shut, Brian immediately called his contacts overseas to ask about Madeline.

When he learned she’d declined the job offer and gone traveling in another country, he furrowed his brow.

He wondered, ‘Since when could Madeline afford to go on vacations?‘

“Send me her latest photos,” he instructed.

Seconds later, the images popped up on his phone.
