Wesley had quietly taken in every subtle shift in her expression just moments ago.

Now, as she stood before him with a smile and a polite apology, his unease only deepened rather than subsided.

“It’s alright. I’m not that easy to offend. But Ms. Grant, I do hope you’ll take my proposal seriously.”

Jessica gave a slight shake of her head. “Dr. Finch, you don’t need to keep trying. I’m not going to agree.”

The smile on her lips remained, but the guarded look in her eyes never wavered.

Wesley capped his pen, eyes fixed on her, a faint crease appearing between his brows.

“If you insist on keeping this from the people around you,” he said, “the likelihood of another emotional shock, and a worsening of your condition, wil only increase.

“If this continues, there’s a real risk of a split in identity. And once that line is crossed, treatment becomes far more complicated.”

He had seen this before, patients with symptoms not unlike hers.

One in particular came to mind. By the time she sought his help, her dissociative symptoms were already fully developed. And from what he’d learned during the course of her therapy, the early signs had been strikingly similar to what Jessica was now displaying.

“That won’t happen,” Jessica replied quietly, shaking her head. “I’ll do what I have to. I’ll keep myself in a good place.”

She couldn’t let herself become like that. She wouldn’t.

“But nothing around you has changed,” Wesley reasoned patiently. “The longer you stay in that environment, the more damage it will do, and now, with the babies, the risk is even greater.”

“I’m trying,” Jessica replied, her tone defensive but weary. “I haven’t seen Jake in a long time. There’s only…” She trailed off, unable or perhaps unwilling to say Brian’s name.

But it hardly mattered. Her aversion was already so evident that someone as proud as Brian wouldn’t hold on for long. Eventually, pride would win out over persistence.

“Give it time,” Jessica said with a hopeful smile, as if trying to convince herself. “Once he walks away on his own, and they’re both out of the picture… maybe I’ll start getting better.”

Wesley watched her carefully. The heaviness in her expression didn’t escape him. But he didn’t challenge her optimism.

She had already made it clear that she wouldn’t accept the treatment plan he’d offered before. Pressing her now would only drive her further away.

“Maybe,” he said after a pause. “In any case, keeping a positive outlook will still do you some good.”

“I intend to,” Jessica nodded.

She had always considered herself someone who looked on the bright side.

“I’ve got a meeting back at the office,” she said, glancing at her watch. “I should get going.”

Wesley didn’t stop her. He simply watched as she walked away, then shook his head slowly.

Back at the company, Jessica returned just in time. Sana was already waiting in her office, meeting notes in hand.

“Jessi, finally! The meeting’s about to start, and almost everyone’s already there. You should get inside.”
