Wesley shook his head, his voice calm as he explained, “I’m not that perceptive. It’s just that when you called earlier, you sounded exhausted. But looking at you now, you don’t seem like someone who’s been losing sleep. So I figured something must have upset you recently.”

Jessica looked down. “Was it that obvious?”

She thought she’d hidden it well. She suddenly felt grateful that she’d chosen to come here first instead of going home.

“Not really,” Wesley said. “I’m just sensitive to people’s emotions. So, would you mind telling me what happened?”

His eyes were gentle as he looked at her, silently encouraging her to speak.

Under his warm gaze, Jessica felt the tension in her body begin to ease.

She gathered her thoughts and slowly began to speak, “Lately, I’ve been dealing with some really frustrating things. I suspect it’s my ex–husband’s new girlfriend behind it all, but I don’t have any proof. And yesterday, my ex–husband found out about everything too.”

Wesley listened quietly, never interrupting even as Jessica spoke in fragments for nearly half an hour.

When she finally finished, he watched her visibly calmer expression and carefully ventured, “Ms. Grant, have you thought about telling your ex–husband about your suspicions? Or just asking him directly?”

Letting this drag on would only hurt Jessica more. For her mental health, being direct was the best approach.

Even if the worst happened, the pain would be temporary and then heal. But prolonging this uncertainty could affect her for who knows how long.

Jessica’s face stiffened. After a few seconds, she said, “There’s no point. We’re divorced. If I bring this up now, it’ll look like 1 can’t let go, like I’m jealous of their relationship and trying to break them up.”

She wasn’t that pathetic. Done was done. She would never look back.

Wesley strongly disagreed. “How is this stirring up trouble? According to you, she’s threatened your safety. You could confront her directly or call the police.”

“I have no proof.” Jessica had considered calling the police, but it would be useless without evidence. She might even get accused of making false claims. That would be even worse if certain people made it public and drew online attention.

“My company’s just getting started. I can’t afford any negative publicity.” Jessica recalled the media frenzy that erupted when Brian was spotted waiting

in line.

The attention definitely benefited the Atkinson Group. Still, if Brian’s image took a hit, the company would go down with him. The damage could be a hundred times worse than they were now. She couldn’t let Grant Group and Inkspire Studio go down that same path.

As these thoughts raced through her mind, Jessica’s entire demeanor sharpened, her presence becoming almost cutting.

Wesley knew right away that today’s session was over.

Jessica felt the same way. She stood up, said goodbye to Wesley, and headed for the door. But Wesley stopped her.

“Dr. Finch, is there something else?” Jessica turned back.

Wesley looked at her thoughtfully. “Ms. Grant, I will repeat it–you must take some time off. Get out of here for a while.”

Jessica nodded. “Thanks. I’ll think about it.” Then she turned and left without looking back.

After leaving Wesley’s office, Jessica threw herself into a routine of early mornings and late nights.

She even volunteered for overtime shifts to avoid Brian and Jacob, who now lived on the same floor as her.

She didn’t have time to travel as Wesley suggested, so she’d have to avoid the situation through action instead.

After pushing herself like this for several days, Dereck finally reached his breaking point.

“Jessica, I’m giving you the day off. Go home early and get some rest,” Dereck said, taking in Jessica’s tired face and the dark circles under her eyes.

“I don’t need it, Dad. The company’s swamped right now, and as VP, I need to set an example,” Jessica refused.

Dereck shot back without hesitation, “So by that logic, shouldn’t I, as chairman, be staying even later and pulling all–nighters?”

Jessica didn’t even think before responding, “Dad, at your age, how can you stay up all night every day?”

Dereck let out a snort. “If you can do it while pregnant, what’s stopping me? Either you go home and rest, or from now on, I’m staying late with you every night.”

Jessica had no choice but to give in. “Okay, Dad, don’t be mad. I’ll listen to you.”

“You better mean it. From now on, you’re leaving with me every day after work. I’ll drive you home.”

Jessica wanted to refuse, but realized this would help her avoid Brian, who insisted on picking her up and dropping her off at work. She accepted. “Alright, thanks for doing this, Dad.”

Seeing Jessica agree to all his demands, Dereck finally looked satisfied. He swept the unfinished documents from her desk and had his driver take Jessica back to her apartment.

Since Jessica had already agreed, she couldn’t back out now. She had no choice but to leave the office early.

When Jessica got home, she walked right into Brian and Jacob, who had just returned from their trip.

“Mom, you’re home so early today!” Jacob hadn’t seen Jessica in days. He was thrilled, waving a bag of snacks as he rushed toward her. “Mom, here! I bought this pastry today. It’s really good! You should try some.”
