“What?” Madeline exclaimed, her voice rising in disbelief.

Jessica glanced casually at the bill. The cheapest item was 19,000 dollars, and the most expensive stuff cost 42,000 dollars. Without a flicker of hesitation, she pulled out her card and handed it to the saleswoman.

Madeline burned with resentment, thinking, Why can Jessica spend so much money without blinking while I have to scrimp and save just to afford a basic outfit worth a few thousand dollars?

I even have to put up with that old guy squeezing every penny out of me!

She looked at the neatly arranged shopping bags at Jessica’s feet, her eyes filled with envy. After all, the total value was several hundred thousand dollars.

Madeline remembered how she used to occasionally accompany Jessica on shopping trips. Jessica would always find a reason to gift Madeline something.

Her very first luxury item was sent by Jessica. That most expensive business outfit in her closet was also from Jéssica as a gift for her promotion.

Madeline suddenly had an idea. She turned to Jessica and said, “Jessi, why are you suddenly buying so many business outfits? Do you really need all of them?”

With a sweet smile, Madeline casually reached for one of the bags on the floor. Each of those dresses was more expensive than the one she chose earlier. She hoped she could snag one for free.

Jessica also recalled how she used to give her heart and soul to help Madeline. A hint of irony touched her lips as she watched Madeline rummaging through the shopping bags with interest.

“We have similar frames, Jessi. These sizes fit me too,” Madeline said.

Jessica remained silent. Madeline took the silence as a sign of weakness and gullibility.

With a sharp eye, she fished out the most expensive piece from the pile, the blazer dress worth 42,000 dollars.

Feeling the luxurious texture of the fabric, Madeline lit up with delight and said, “I really like this one, Jessi. Can you please give it to me?”

Realizing that might sound too forward, she added, “If you miss Jake, I can bring him to see you.”
