Jessica did not take the episode with Madeline to heart.

There were five days left on the countdown to her divorce. That same day, Jessica officially started her work at Grant Group.

Dereck personally took her around the company and introduced her to the board members in a brief introductory meeting.

Initially, Dereck had intended to guide Jessica closely and work with her side by side, which would also make it easier to transition her into the role. But Jessica turned him down.

“Those old foxes are not easy to handle. If they don’t try to sabotage you, that’s already a mercy,” Dereck said with concern.

He couldn’t bear to see Jessica suffer or be mistreated, especially not within his own company.

“Actually, I want to hand over a few of the company’s long–running, high–yield projects to you. With achievements in hand, those old geezers won’t have a word to say,” he added.

Dereck clearly intended to pave the way for Jessica and gave her “accomplishments” that would earn her a firm footing.

“Dad, do you really have so little confidence in me? Are you so certain the board members will take advantage of me?” Jessica said.

Seeing Dereck’s uncase, she could not reject him outright, so she used reverse psychology.

Dereck understood her game and agreed to let her prove herself.

Since he was backing her from behind the scenes, any trouble Jessica encountered would serve as experience.

On her first day, Jessica made herself known to the upper management. In the afternoon, she had a brief meeting with the board members.

One of the board members complained, “Dereck’s daughter majored in art. How can she manage business here?”

Someone else added, “She’s supposed to lead this company forward? At this rate, we’ll be bankrupt before we retire.”

Another guy said, “So we shouldn’t be nice to her. Let’s act fast. Drive her out and let her go find a man to marry or whatever she’s supposed to do.”

Jessica stood outside the meeting room with a thick stack of folders in her arms.

Inside, the board members were passionately discussing how to force her out of the company.

Jessica knocked on the door and pushed it open without waiting for a response.

The speaker was Pierre Davidson, a man nearing sixty. He leaned back in his chair and turned his body sideways, as if Jessica wasn’t even worth a glance from him.

The other board members watched Jessica like she was some sort of spectacle. To them, she was just a pampered heiress who happened to be the CEO’s daughter.

“Mr. Davidson, you must be joking. I definitely can’t give guidance,” Jessica said calmly, looking friendly. “But if some people insist on wielding their age like a weapon, I do feel obliged to speak up.”

Her words were soft but sharp, and her polite tone carried a barbed undertone that made Pierre and the others’s faces go gloomy.

This was not what they had expected. Jessica remained completely composed in the face of their open hostility, as if she didn’t consider them a threat at all. They even deliberately said those words to make Jessica overhear.
