Stella put on a fake smile and replied to Jared, “Mr. Crawford, you have an ill reputation, so it’s quite easy to know who you are.”

Jared was not concerned about how she ridiculed him. He took an impatient step forward. “Gwen, I only found out after you left that there were many misunderstandings between us. I’ve already realized my mistakes, and I’m no longer with Janice, so can you please give me a chance to make it up to you?”

Stella came to a sudden realization. “Is Janice your lover? Because of her, you made your legal wife jump into the sea to commit suicide. I thought how much you loved her, but it turned out to be nothing.”

Jared smiled bitterly. “You might not believe me even if I say it, but from the beginning till the end, I actually didn’t love Janice that much.

“In the beginning, I got together with her because she saved my life. Since I didn’t have a girlfriend then, I naturally accepted her when she confessed to me. For years after that, I didn’t meet another lady who moved me, so I just stayed together with her.”

He had not done it because he felt that it was better than nothing. Instead, it was because Jared could not find a way to repay Janice’s saving grace, hence he accepted her when she confessed to him and said that she wanted to be his girlfriend.

Frankly, they were together because Jared wanted to thank her.

“I hated you not because you took away the status as Mrs. Crawford, but because you hurt my pride. I don’t like being threatened by someone else, but you made my dad force me to marry you. Feeling indignant, I wanted to find a way to take my revenge on you. After noticing that you minded Janice’s presence, I thought by staying together with her I’d be able to make you suffer and regret having gotten married to me...”

Stella was expressionless throughout as Jared spoke. After all, he was talking about someone else, so she was unperturbed. She only thought the man was shameless for having played with the woman’s feelings.

Following that, Jared lost himself and grabbed her hands. He was eager to express his feelings, which he had nowhere to vent for five years. “I came to a sudden realization only after you left that it wasn’t because there wasn’t another lady who moved me — you were the one who made my heart beat.”

Stella raised her eyebrow and laughed. “Gwen moved you, but you still got together with Janice? You even hurt Gwen repeatedly. President Crawford, you have a unique way of loving someone.”

“You pursued me for ten years, and I hated you for ten years, but I suddenly fell in love with you. I changed, but you didn’t. It would seem like I was defeated, and I was unwilling to admit defeat, so I refused to listen to my heart.” Jared had not spoken about this because he wanted to defend his mistakes; he wanted to tell her what he did not manage to say in the past.

“Gwen, I really love you.”

Stella withdrew her hand with a straight face. “President Crawford, your speech has refreshed my understanding of scumbags. Thank you for your teaching, but it’s best you tell them to Gwen at her grave. She might be able to hear you, whereas it’s meaningless if you tell me.”
