Chapter 227
Jessica nearly rolled her eyes at him. Could he understand her? “Is that really what I meant to say?” Jessica thought.
Jessica glared at Leon and began, “You…” Then she was at a loss for words. But Leon had already settled beside her, crossing his legs on the carpet just
as she did.
Leon scooted closer to Jessica, his eyes fixed on the book in her hands. “Jessica, what are Y too.” He looked surprisingly serious and earnest.
Jessica frowned and couldn’t help asking, “Why?”

“I’m just afraid you’re too amazing for me. What if a swarm of guys come chasing after you, and then you get lured away by those flashy temptresses?”
Leon shot her a plaintive look. Jessica was shocked to see that.
“What’s with those pitiful puppy–dog eyes? Shouldn’t the mighty King of the Northern Frontier look more dignified than that?” she thought.
But Leon was clearly sulking inside. “Back then, I barely took my eyes off you for a second, and you let Waldo steal you away! You’re such a flirt with no self–control. You wicked woman!”
“What kind of ridiculous nonsense is he spouting?” Jessica was utterly bewildered. “I didn’t even know you back then!” Jessica retorted, exasperated.
Leon huffed, “See? Not only did you let
someone else steal you away, but you also completely forgot about me! You really are a heartless little minx!”
But anyway, that was all in the past now. Being a grown man, he wouldn’t hold that against her. Well, at least she and Waldo had a falling out. It saved him the trouble of scheming to break them up. All those schemes he thought up before was a waste.
Back when he was still stuck in the Northern Frontier, he had already cooked up all sorts of schemes. He even considered dirty tricks like spiking Waldo’s drink to set him up with some random woman. What a shame he never even got to use them. After a moment’s thought, Leon once again talked himself into believing everything was fine.
“It’s all my fault,” Leon said. “I shouldn’t have stayed in the Northern Frontier for five whole years. I’d planned to make it back before your coming–of–age, but that year I was so badly wounded I couldn’t even crawl my way back.”
Leon glanced at the book in Jessica’s hand, his words sounding almost offhand. Yet for some reason, Jessica couldn’t shake the feeling that he was telling the truth.
Then he added, “If I could’ve crawled, I would’ve crawled back to you! That year, I was bedridden for three months. Later, I heard you and your father had gone, and with the Northern Frontier campaign at its peak, I truly couldn’t get away. But I figured, since you were in the military camp, that bastard probably wouldn’t dare lay a finger on you. With such strict discipline, you two wouldn’t have a chance to do anything closer, so I thought I could afford to wait a little longer.”
Jessica’s face flushed instantly. She glared at him, but words failed her. “Who would’ve thought Prince Leon had so many little schemes up his sleeve? This guy has such a dirty mind. He spends all day thinking up these sneaky, silly things!” Jessica thought.
Jessica wasn’t even sure what she was thinking. The words slipped out before she could stop them, “There was never anything between me and him!”
“I know you are waiting for me all along.”
