Chapter 249
“So all these years… you’ve been hiding your martial arts training from me, just because I didn’t like it?” Waldo’s voice wat hoarse, thick with despera helplessness. His face was ashen, all life drained from it.
“Bullshit!” Jessica’s response was just a simple word.
The black wolves lunged again. Jessica swung her spear in a wide arc, sending the first two wolves flying.
But it seemed the wolves had changed their tactics.
From the high slope, the lead black wolf howled twice. Instantly, two wolves broke away from the pack and lunged straight at Waldo and Hughie, who were behind Jessica.
“What cunning beasts!” Jessica’ brows furrowed tightly. With a lightning–fast reverse thrust, she impaled the wolf lunging at Waldo, then swiftly followed with another spear strike to deflect the one attacking Hughie.
But behind her, two even fiercer wolves lunged at her in an instant.
Jessica stumbled slightly but quickly regained her composure, pivoted on her feet, and with a swift motion, deflected one of them.
Yet the other’s claws had already grazed her arm.
“Jessica! Watch out!” Despite his despair, Waldo was still deeply concerned for her safety. The sight made his blood run cold.
Jessica’s eyes darkened with resolve. With a powerful thrust of her arm, she sent the black wolf flying through the air.
But the two people behind her were again targeted by the black wolves.
After several rounds of this relentless assault, more and more wounds gradually appeared on Jessica’s arms.
Standing guard by Waldo’s side, Hughie was also battered and bleeding.
With Jessica’s figure reflected in his eyes, Waldo was torn between heartache and despair. He said weakly, “Jessica, just go… Don’t worry about me. I’m not worth dying for…”
He was truly filled with regret as he thought, ‘Jessica was always by my side, so good to me, yet I let myself become infatuated with that ignorant, ill- mannered country bumpkin Priscilla, just because she was something new. When my mother called Priscilla a country girl, I even defended her, insisting she had her own virtues. But now I see, the mistake was mine alone. Everyone else saw it clearly. What I called genuine character was nothing but vulgarity and rudeness. Only I was blind, unable to tell gold from dross.‘
Waldo murmured, “Jessica… I’m so sorry… I truly don’t deserve this…”
Jessica frowned, completely fed up with him. “If I leave, my family will face disaster!
“Waldo, stop being so self–absorbed! I stopped liking you ages ago, yet you keep blabbering on. How disgusting!”
Even as she spoke, Jessica thrust her spear with lightning speed.
The black wolf collapsed instantly, but more of the creatures kept surging toward them from all sides.
Hughie froze, cringing so hard his toes curled. ‘Ms. Yates… must you be this blunt?‘ he thought.
Just now, Waldo had been deeply touched, but his face cycled from ghostly white to flushed crimson, then back to pale again. That intense emotional rollercoaster nearly did him in.
Suddenly, Jessica’s eyes lit up. She shouted, “Magnus! Over here!”
