Chapter 256
Jessica’s heart skipped a beat.
She knew Leon had been injured at the hunting grounds, quite seriously at that, but surely it hadn’t taken a turn for the worse.
She thought, ‘Could something unexpected have happened along the way?‘
Jessica hurried back to her room, grabbed her medical kit, and rushed out with Garbisch. As they walked, she fired off anxious questions, “What’s wrong? Was the wound not cleaned properly, causing a fever? How is he now? Is His Highness still conscious?”
‘But this doesn’t make sense,‘ Jessica thought.
After all, she thought, as the ruler of the Northern Borderlands, he ought to be tough as nails.
‘How could he be so badly injured after coming back? He’s in even worse shape than an average warrior,‘ she thought in disbelief.
Garbisch looked uneasy. Once they were both in the carriage, he finally spoke. “His Highness… his wound hasn’t worsened, and he’s fully conscious. It’s just that… he’s in low spirits.”
“In low spirits?” Jessica blinked in surprise. “What kind of ‘not well‘ is that?”
She thought, ‘Brother, could you be more specific? You had her worried sick just now!‘
“Jessica,” Garbisch turned to look at her, hesitating for a long moment before cautiously asking, “Do you… care deeply about Leon?”
“He got injured saving me. It’s only proper that I show concern,” Jessica replied with impeccably measured words.
“Surely there’s more to your concern than that?” Garbisch asked, his face alight with curiosity.
“Garbisch, since when did you get so nosy?” Jessica didn’t mind, she knew exactly what was on her brother’s mind.
“I’ve decided never to marry, Garbisch, so quit your nosy questions,” she said firmly, “When Leon and I were attacked by black wolves, he could’ve escaped unharmed with his skills. But he mistakenly thought I was helpless and insisted on protecting me. That’s how he got wounded…”
“Jessica,” Garbisch said, “he meant well. Don’t just brush it off like it’s nothing.”
Still, no one had expected Jessica to be such a skilled fighter. People weren’t used to seeing her as a skilled warrior, so when they see her delicate appearance, it was only natural they wanted to protect her.
Jessica merely smiled, offering no comment.
She asked, “Why do you say he’s upset?”
“If you don’t go see him, he’ll feel wronged,” Garbisch said, reaching into his coat and pulling out a letter. He handed it to her, his expression a bit awkward. “This… was given to me by Shawn.”
Jessica took the letter, opened it, and could only stare in speechless disbelief.
Jessica thought, ‘Just what kind of person is this Demon King anyway? When he’s cold and distant, he’s as terrifying as a demon, his icy presence is enough to keep even Monica at arm’s length.
‘But how could someone as ruthless and terrifying as a demon write something like this? It’s simply unbelievable.‘
Jessica shot Garbisch a look, as if to say, “Can you believe this?”
He also looked thoroughly embarrassed. 71… I don’t really know Leon that well, but I think he’s genuinely… upset.”
