The surveillance footage was blurry, but it was clear that the figure was a woman dressed in a cleaner’s uniform, with a hat and mask covering her face completely.

Charlotte’s expression froze. “This person is the key. We need to find a way to get the staff list from the cocktail party.” 

“That’s going to be tough,” Diana said, her face grim. “Brace yourself, Charlotte. This could turn into a real mess.” 

Charlotte lowered her eyes, a feeling of dread settling in her stomach. If they couldn’t get to the bottom of this, the blame would forever hang over her head. 

For the past five years, she hadn’t bothered investigating. She’d been in love with Arthur, and she’d held onto hope for Julius. Before Sarah, before the realization that she was a stand–in, before the crushing discovery that she was utterly dispensable, she’d actually had expectations for her life.

The elevator doors slid open. Charlotte composed herself and said calmly, “Take your time, Diana. It’s okay if we can’t find ⚫ anything.”

“Hello, hello! I’m Steven Wills, Hendrick’s assistant. Please come with me. Hendrick’s already waiting for you in the studio.” 

Hendrick Andrew was a trending hotshot, a male celebrity who’d skyrocketed to fame with a hit historical drama. He was raking in endorsement deals left and right. 

This time, he was shooting a commercial for a nationally recognized brand, and that was where Charlene came in. 

Upon entering the studio, they saw a man seated in a chair, surrounded by seven or eight staff members fussing over him. They were busily touching up his makeup, wiping away sweat, and adjusting his clothes.

“Hendrick, Charlene’s here.” Steven jogged over to Hendrick and whispered. 

Hendrick looked up. In person, he wasn’t as striking as he appeared on screen. His skinny frame made his bones prominent, but his features were indeed delicate, the kind of pretty boy look that was all the rage with young women these days. 

Tina stepped forward to discuss the project with Hendrick’s manager, Reese White.

Charlotte decided to start with the promotional posters, figuring that nailing the style for those would set the tone for the commercial. 

She walked straight towards Hendrick. Just as she was about to speak, someone stopped her. “You can say whatever you need to from there. Why are you getting so close?” 

The person’s tone was wary as if she were some kind of suspicious character with ill intentions. 

Charlotte paused, then spoke, but her voice was soft. 

Hendrick frowned. “What did you say? Speak up, will you?” 

Charlotte calmly replied, “If you listen carefully, you’ll hear me just fine.” 

Hendrick looked up from his phone, his eyes widening as he took in Charlotte’s appearance. A flicker of admiration crossed his face, and his attitude instantly shifted. He flashed her at charming smile.
