Besides, Wrenthought that keeping his substitute teaching a secret wasn’t exactly wise–Clara would find out sooner or later. 

And now that she already knew he hadn’t left, there wasn’t much point in hiding anything from her anymore. 

What mattered most was whether Nins could be trusted Wren wasn’t comfortable entrusting Clara’s affairs to a stranger, no matter how well–intentioned she seemed. He needed to make sure Nina wasn’t a problem before he considered relying on her. 

“I went to your school today and ran into her, “Wren said casually as if it were just a passing comment. “She came up to me first, and we talked for a bit. Are you two close?” 

Clara frowned at the question “Why are you suddenly asking about her?” 

She seemed really concerned when she heard you were sick and said she wanted to visit you in the hospital. But I figured you need 

I figured you needed rest, so I didn’t let her come Wren spoke evenly, watching her expression closely. 

“She also mentioned that you two share an office and have a good relationship.” 

A friend? 

Clara pressed her lips together in a faintly mocking smile. 

From the moment she met Nina, the woman had shown nothing but undisguised hostility and warness toward her. Even though Clara had done her best to keep her distance from both Nina and Ryan, the hostility never faded. 

She understood, of course. Nina saw her as a romantic rival–hence the animosity. 

But why would she tell Wren they were close? 

Unless… 

Was she trying to get closer to him? 

Clara studied Wren’s face. 

There was a time when she had been utterly captivated by him, unable to help falling for him. 

Even now, she had to admit that his face was undeniably striding. Strong, refined features, an air of effortless elegance. No matter where he was, he always stood out. It wasn’t surprising that someone would try to get his attention 

Using a mutual acquaintance as an excuse to get close wasn’t exactly a stretch 

Clara just hadn’t expected Wren to take an interest. 

“We’re just coworkers. Not particularly close,” Clara explained. 

She didn’t tell him about her conflicts with Mina. Their relationship wasn’t at a point where she could–or should–be sharing such things with him. 

More importantly, she didn’t want Wren using it as an excuse to stay in Longfield 

When’s expression darkened slightly as he recalled something. That statement was completely different from what Nina had said. 

Back at the school, Nina had seemed genuinely warm and concerned about Clara’s well–being. But now, seeing Clara’s flat reaction, Wren could tell the mention of Nina didn’t particularly move her 

Wren suddenly recalled a small detail from earlier. When Nina first approached him, she hadn’t known he was the substitute teacher. She had stopped him before that, possibly out of professional rudosity. 

But even after he clarified, she had followed up with him. So why had she stopped him in the first place?
