Jeremy looked at her blank face before his eyes darkened a bit.

A moment earlier, he had seen her standing alone, smiling for no reason. The second she spotted him, her smile vanished, and she stiffened.

He said nothing more, lowered the window, and told her, "Get in."

Melody studied him. He wore a shirt with the sleeves rolled up and rested one hand on the wheel. He looked every inch the polished professional.

Yet, what filled her mind was the coat on Krystal's shoulders.

Jeremy saw her hesitate. His brow twitched, and his voice dropped. "We're having lunch at Opulent Oasis. Get in."

Opulent Oasis was where the Chesson Manor was located. Owen had called after Jeremy's shift, asked him to come home to discuss something, and told him to bring Melody.

Melody walked to the front door. Then, she paused and reached for the rear one.

Krystal usually rode up front.

Melody meant no slight. She felt awkward, as if she and Krystal took turns beside Jeremy, who spoke in a chilly tone. "Do you think I'm your driver?"

She murmured, "I get carsick and want to rest in the back."

He said nothing, clicked open the rear locks, and left her no choice but to sit in the front.

Climbing in, she glanced at the floor. Jeremy frowned. "What are you looking at?"

She hesitated. "I was worried Krystal might have dropped something again."

The line sounded unlike her, and even she froze after saying it.

Jeremy slid her sideways look stoically. He was always distant, untouched by other people's feelings.
