He'd worked his way into NYU, dreaming of making it big in New York City.

"Sophia, Danny told me Benjamin only chased you because you're from New York."

"He wants to stay here and marrying you would make that easier." 

Danny was Benjamin's roommate, and he was dating my best friend, Emily.

"So what? At least he knows what he wants." 

"And anyway, even if I weren't from New York, he'd still love me." 

Emily had laughed and called me naive.

He started as a pharmaceutical sales rep, then built his own team.

To reassure me, he proposed and promised to make me the legal owner of the new company.

Later, he faked running off with the money. 

When my parents sold their house to bail me out, he showed up again. 

He told me he was behind it all. 

Because I'd let his mom die. 

He wanted me to pay. 

A tear slipped down my cheek, and I wiped it away with a shaky hand.
