I nodded, continuing after him while I remained careful of the gleaming red fur that followed us around. The wolf kept avoiding me, like I was some plague. It did very little to make me feel better about myself but I tried to push the feeling down.
Arthur seemed to have noticed my change in mood. His face was set in a serious look that left me wondering if maybe I'd done something wrong.
Then he smiled.
"What did I say about the Arcane?" he asked.
I cleared my throat. "A select part of the school that had once been the early grounds for academic work and other curricular discoveries."
His eyes lingered on me as he kept firing more questions. I answered all of them with is, different knowledge of all what he'd explained still swimming around my head. He hummed, seemingly satisfied by my answer.
I remained silent, expecting him to maybe compliment the fact that I'd answered all his questions correctly and without a hassle. The look of seriousness he'd had before melted into a playful smile.
"I made all of this up."
My jaw dropped. He let out a small laugh as he shook his head. It was taking all of my self-control not to chuck the recordings I'd made against a wall.
"So none of what you told me is true?" I asked. "The Arcane? Manilla Axis?"
He shook his head. "Not one of it. The real history of the Academy is right there in the museum, but it won't be an easy feat trying to go through those books."
"Why?" I didn't like the sound of that.
"They have a man high, consisting of the brains of people who've had problems trying to read and memorize them."
I looked at him in shock. How was I ever supposed to understand the history of the Academy if that were the case? I was still deliberating on some other courses of action I could take when a familiar voice cut through my thoughts.
"There you are."
I turned to see Cyrus heading for us. He watched me first, a small smile playing at his lips. No doubt he was smiling because I'd realized what Arthur truly looked like contrary to my initial conclusion.
"Arthur. It's been a hot minute. I've been looking everywhere for you?" Cyrus smiled.
"You probably never even checked." If Arthur could roll his eyes, he might have done that already.
"You know you love me." He smiled cheekily.
I wanted to know what would happen should a student violate such rule. A nagging voice told me something like this might have happened already and the culprit must have been disciplined severely.
"I trust you, Giselle." Arthur smiled. "You don't strike me as a person of low morals. Not like Agnrs."
"Thank you, sir." I bowed my head a little.
It warmed my insides a little to know that he already had a pretty high regard for me and I hadn't even taken any lessons with him yet.
I'd been initially worried that maybe the elders wouldn't take too kindly to me. They might have already gotten a bad impression of me due to Agnrs' slander. I wouldn't put it past her to do such a thing and try to ruin my name before I even got to this place.
Luckily, that didn't seem to be the case. I was glad for Arthur's words. It was like a boost to my confidence and it made the pressure of being accepted here ease just a little.
Agnrs.
I hated how her name seemed to cling to every part of the school like a lingering fog. Even Arthur didn't seem all that happy mentioning her name.
There was still the nagging feeling in my mind that something had happened.
