Evelyn kept staring at him. Damien wished there was something he could do to right this. Not that he felt entirely bad about this whole thing and idea, the fact was, the subject of the odds troubled him.
If he had done or said this to another girl other than Evelyn, he wouldn't have had to worry. Someone like Claire or Tendzel or even Ayisha. He wouldn't have had to scold himself so much.
But Evelyn! He felt so terrible for doing this to her. And as much as he wanted to take the words back, he couldn't find a better excuse, else he would bring hell crashing down upon himself.
He was trying to give his heart a chance, or his mind. But neither of them was quick to bring something up. And while he thought he was getting an idea, there was a movement which came from before him.
When he looked, he saw Evelyn turning and running towards the door, crying as she ran into the hallway; the door hadn't been shut when she stepped in in the first place.
"Evelyn."
Damien wanted to move, perhaps run after her, but he felt a hand gripping his arm. He didn't need to be told who that was.
He remained standing there for a while, without making a precise movement. He closed his eyes for a while.
"Let go."
He called and slowly Elisa did as told. She was smart enough to tell that his voice wasn't what it used to be. There was an edge and a hoarseness to it.
He walked away from her towards the office chair which was locked to her work table. He settledin it.
He knew he didn't have time to worry about things like this, but he felt really bad for the fragile girl. He had never thought of making her cry.
It was at that moment that he realised that the girls were becoming a big part of him, especially some of them. He had been wrong all along.
And good thing was that he discovered this too soon.
"I'm sorry this happened. I shouldn't have done that. It was rude and illogical."
He heard Elisa apologising, trying to make right for the wrong? He thought she would walk to him, but she remained at where she was. He didn't need to be told that she really felt bad. He arced his head towards her,
"There is no crying over a broken jar of spoilt milk."
He announced. He didn't know what the words were supposed to do to her. Perhaps cheer her up or give her something else to worry about.
"Come."
He called and she walked slowly to him. She was reluctant to go have a seat.
Damien felt like the villain here. In just few minutes, he had made two girls of classes feel bad and shaky. He didn't think that that was a good thing.
"You aren't an usher, are you?"
She shook her head and walked to settle down in the chair which was opposite his. He looked up at her. She was trying to avoid his gaze. For some reason, he felt a need to smile. But that would be a bad idea.
"Nothing changes."
He announced. His words were way too strong for her to ignore. She gazed upon him. With curiosity and wants. It was conspicuous that she wanted him to go on with whatever he had in mind.
"I'm not sure I understand what you mean, boss."
Though it seemed like her old self was back, yet there was this strange fog hovering over her composure. It was natural for an iota of awkwardness to linger after such experience.
"Don't you want to be my girlfriend? I mean, do you already have someone? Or do you think I'm too young to be your man?"
Her eyes bulged at her socket when Damien stopped talking. It was as though her ears were playing tricks on her. She couldn't wrap her head around it.
