Nathalie stood a little ahead, waiting for Nathan to catch up. Her face was lit up with a smile, pure and content.
“What’s on your mind? You look so happy,” Nathan asked gently.
Nathalie replied, “Nathan, you know, the last time I saw my dad, I felt really sorry for him. He was born with a silver spoon, and then, just like that, he found himself with nothing. How could he come to terms with such a drastic change?”
“But now, I kind of envy him. My grandpa left him quite a bit. Even though Regan didn’t manage it well, there’s a saying, ‘a skinny camel is still bigger than a horse.’ By selling off those assets, my dad can still have a comfortable retirement.”
“He had Grandpa looking out for him, you know? He’s pretty lucky.”
Nathan nodded, “If your dad could wake up, I bet what he'd value more than those old assets would be you, his daughter. You’re the real joy in his life.”
Nathalie found it hard to believe she meant so much to her father. Clearly, she said, “Not everyone is like you, always putting me first.”
Nathan’s expression dimmed a bit.
He squeezed her hand, “Nathalie, believe in yourself. You deserve to be loved.”
Not wanting to let Nathan down, she nodded, “Alright.”
The car waiting for Nathan and Nathalie was parked right at the entrance of the Stewart family estate. Dominick was in the driver’s seat, waving Nathan over. “Sir, over here.”
Nathan and Nathalie walked toward him.
Just then, danger crept in silently.
A gun, dark as night, was aimed at Nathan.
She saw the dark hole in Nathan’s right side where pink “blood” was seeping out, and his face paled.
“Nathalie, don’t look. Please,” Nathan, even now, wanted to keep his grace and dignity intact in front of her.
Nathalie’s eyes shook, and she trembled all over.
Her mind went blank.
She could only murmur, “Nathan, please, hang on. Don’t let me leave you, let me stay with you.”
“Please.” She pushed the car door open, catching him in her arms as he began to collapse.
