Chapter 140
Chapter 140
Meredith jerked her hand back in fright and said, “I only ran because I was afraid you’d get mad. Are you crazy? Why would I want your hair?!”
Adrienne shouted angrily, “You guys have always been doing weird stuff. Who knows what kind of perverted thing you’re trying to pull this timer
The commotion quickly drew the attention of nearby classmates, who all looked over.
Meredith felt thoroughly embarrassed and snapped angrily, “Whatever! I can’t be bothered with you!”
With that, she once again fled in a panic.
Valerie looked at the hair in her hand, feeling something was off. She pondered what someone could do with a lock of hair.
Adrienne also had a strange expression and said, “What would she want your hair for? I mean, other than DNA testing, there’s not much you can do with it. Wait, what if she wants to use it to fake evidence of you being at the scene of some crime and frame you for it? That would be terrifying!”
No wonder she wrote novels. Her imagination really went places. Valerie couldn’t help but laugh out loud..
But after laughing, she still felt uneasy.
Meredith normally never talked to her. Today’s strange behavior made her even more cautious.
Adrienne said with a hint of relief, “Good thing you called her out. Now the other students know what she did, so if anything bad really does happen, at
least there are witnesses.”
Valerie didn’t quite think that was the case, but as she looked again at the hair in her hand, her frown deepened. She really couldn’t figure out what Meredith was up to.
Meredith ran out, heart pounding wildly. She didn’t expect her to be this alert.
Fortunately, she’d been quick and managed to secretly keep two strands in her pocket, so it wasn’t a complete loss.
She soon met up with Juliette. Meredith took out the two strands of hair.
Juliette looked at the two black hairs with some disdain and said, “Only two?”
“Two is pretty good! You have no idea how intimidating Valerie is. The moment she noticed I was pulling her hair, she confronted me! She kept asking what I was doing,” Meredith said while sipping water. “But seriously, why do you even want her hair?”
“Don’t worry about it.” Juliette examined the hair. “You’re sure this is really Valerie’s and not some random one you picked up to fool me?”
Meredith snapped, “Of course it’s hers! If you don’t believe me, go pull it yourself!”
If Juliette could get close to Valerie, she wouldn’t have needed Meredith.
Stashing the hair away, Juliette said, “I’ll have it tested first. If it’s really Valerie’s, then I’ll tell you the secret.”
“Are you messing with me?” Meredith snapped.
Juliette said arrogantly, “Why would I? But I have to make sure you’re not playing me. Not everyone can know this secret. Relax. If it’s real, you’ll get your reward. Just keep today’s events to yourself. This is your thank–you gift.”
Meredith’s phone pinged. She opened it and saw a transfer of six hundred dollars.
For a student like Meredith, six hundred dollars was no small sum. And Meredith hadn’t gotten any prize money yet from her singing competition. This

was a decent chunk of cash.
She was extremely curious about what Juliette wanted with Valerie’s hair, but
she also knew that asking would get her nowhere. So she said nothing
Juliette seemed to read her mind and said smugly, “I know you’re curious. But all I’ll say is, this has nothing to do with you, it won’t hurt you, either, his pretend nothing happened.”
She added, “Once I confirm it’s her hair, I’ll give you another one thousand dollars, and I’ll tell you that secret I promised. But first, you need to keep your mouth shut. Otherwise…”
Juliette’s eyes filled with menace as she leaned closer, warning, “I have plenty of ways to make sure you never speak again.”
Meredith’s heart skipped a beat..
In that moment, she felt like she’d gotten herself involved in something way over her head.
Staring at Juliette, Meredith felt a mix of thrill and fear. But she still didn’t ask anything more. They parted ways quickly.
When she returned to the recording studio, Jasmine was already impatient. “What the hell were you doing? Are you singing or not? If you don’t want to participate, just say so!”
Meredith hurried to catch up, head down, not daring to say a word.
After dinner, Valerie got a phone call from someone she hadn’t heard from in a while. It was Russell.
He hadn’t contacted her for quite some time. It seemed like he’d been busy lately. Now that he was calling, there was probably something going on.
Sure enough, the moment she answered, she heard Russell’s cheerful voice. “Valerie, will you be at school tomorrow? I want to bring you an invitation.”
Valerie frowned. “An invitation?”
He said quickly, “Yeah. You didn’t forget, did you? My grandma’s birthday party is next month. You promised to perform there. I said I’d introduce you to some important people!”
“Oh, now I remember.” Valerie smiled. “But I never said I’d definitely go.”
Russell responded, “You did say so! Last time on the phone, you said you’d consider it!”
Valerie replied, “I said I’d consider it. I never said I’d definitely attend.”
