Chapter 38
Valerie didn’t know the full story, but those two names had come up more than once. There was no way they weren’t involved.
Still, no matter how familiar they sounded, she had never seen their faces. Narrowing! her eyes, she asked, “Who are they?”
She didn’t recognize them, but Kelly did. “Brody’s drinking buddies,” she said with a sneer. “The three of them are always getting up to no good together -birds of a feather. But I didn’t see them just now. Why?”
Johanna, the tall, no–nonsense one, stroked her chin and said, “That’s the weird part. Sariah and I both saw them whispering with Renata earlier, and then Renata came over to get you drinking.”
Sariah added, “It feels off. Maybe you two should just call it a night and head out early?”
Valerie could barely keep upright–her cheeks were flushed deep red, and her mind was spinning.
Kelly nodded. She went out to say a few polite goodbyes to the elders, then quickly returned and helped Valerie up, steering her toward the back exit.
Sariah and Johanna escorted them all the way to the door, only leaving once they were safely handed off to their bodyguards.
Back inside the reception hall, Renata spotted them reenter and immediately curled her lip. “Nosy bitches,” she muttered under her breath.
But she didn’t mind too much–her plan was already in motion.
In fact, she was in such high spirits she raised her glass to her close friend Kassidy Austin. “Didn’t expect Valerie to hold her liquor that well. But with that much alcohol in her, she’s bound to go down soon.”
Kassidy clinked her glass and smirked. “Kelly’s no lightweight either. If anything indecent happens to them tonight, well… nobody would be surprised.”
The two exchanged a wicked glance–satisfaction gleaming in their eyes.
Meanwhile, outside, Kelly and Valerie leaned on each other for support. Javon and Robert Lane–two imposing bodyguards with the posture of trained soldiers–flanked them on either side.
But the moment they stepped into the parking garage, Valerie tensed. Something felt… off.
Their car wasn’t parked in a hidden spot–anyone could find it. And/Sariah had mentioned seeing Brody’s goons talking to Renata. Then, just minutes later, Renata had shown up trying to get them drunk?
There was no way that was a coincidence.
And those men? They’d never approached them face–to–face during the party.
‘So where had they gone?‘ Valerie narrowed her eyes, her steps slowing.
‘Renata went to all that trouble… just to get us tipsy? That can’t be it.’
Not far off, hidden in the shadows, came a low curse, “Who the hell are those guys? Bodyguards?”
“Looks like it,” another voice muttered. “Shit. If they’ve got two guards, we’ll need backup.”
The two men were none other than Billy and Alonso.
They had been lurking nearby, fueled by too much alcohol and even more bad ideas. Brody’s persuasion hadn’t helped either. The plan? Use the room spray they’d brought–quick–acting and potent. Once Valerie was out cold, they’d drag her off, do as they pleased, and dump her later.
All they had to say was, “She got drunk and started flirting, practically begging for it.” The public would eat it up–and they’d walk away squeaky clean.
