David froze, his lips tightening. 

“David, this so–called concern of yours? Hurt me, then try to patch it up with a meaningless gesture? Keep it.” 

David held her gaze for a moment before turning away. 

Because if he stayed any longer, he might say something that neither of them could ever take back.
