In all honesty, it made him nervous. This Ella was unpredictable. Not that the old Ella was predictable but at least he was rest assured that she loved him. This Ella however acted like a complete stranger and the look she kept giving him showed how little she actually trusted him.

“What is it?” he dared himself to ask.

“Tell me about that day.” She took a deep, calming breath then locked her eyes with his as she sat on the couch next to him. “Tell me what happened on the day I had an accident. And please, keep your promise in mind while you are at it.”

“It was my fault,” he started with a gloom note. “Growing up, you seemed to hate your father and blame him for everything so I decided to search for him. I hired a few private investigators and one of them actually managed to find him. I called your father and Derek told me a different story than what you have told me or what your mother has been telling you. So I decided to set up a lunch date so you both could meet. Instead, it turned into a disaster.” He shook his head in remorse and guilt. He could not even look at her knowing how badly he had failed her and how he had been the reason she was in her current state. If anything, he deserved this. He deserved her forgetting about him.

“Please continue,” said Ella softly. Something told her that he did not tell her the whole truth and right now she needed to hear the truth more than anything.

“You were angry at me for not asking your permission before I arranged for you and your father to meet. We were supposed to have lunch together, just the two of us but I asked your father to come.”

The small frown on his forehead deepened and she knew he was going to deliver bad news. Still, she stayed where she was.

“We had a short argument before you stormed off. I tried to find you but I could not so I contacted your mother. She informed me that you were there but after having a conversation with her, you left in your car again.” He took a deep breath, his hands were closing his face. “The next thing I knew the police was calling me and telling me that you had an accident.”

“D-did I—” She bit her bottom lip then opened her mouth again to continue, “Did I kill someone?” His eyes widened and there was a little confirmation there which scared her even further. “I did, didn’t I? Gosh, I killed someone!” Ella shook her head frantically and tears started forming in her eyes.

Being put in this place, even though he did not want to lie to her, he could not let her feeling all the remorse and hurt now while she was still recovering. So instead of telling her about their lost baby, he answered her, “You did not hit any passerby, and the truck driver who caused your accident is still alive. In fact, the police are looking for him. He will be held responsible. I will make damn sure of it.”

“Oh.” Her hands were stopped shaking and slowly but surely, she was getting calmer each passing second. “I have one question,” she finally asked again.
