"You both are a disgrace for the Mercy pack!", my father's harsh voice boomed.

It almost felt as if those words were directed at me and I stumbled backwards.

"But Alpha..", a female voice tried to say sobbingly.

"Shut up!", my father instantly interrupted her and I flinched.

What had they done that had made my father this angry?

Several beats of silence followed where I could only make out two hearts almost beating out of control and one heart that seemed calm.

"I'm going to make an example of you.", my father then stated and I heard something metalic pulled out of something.

"NO!", a desperate female voice shouted.

I heard something heavy hit the floor. Maybe my father had dropped the metalic object?

But at the exact moment I realized what had happened, a hand covered my mouth.

The scream that would have pierced the night as I had comprehended that only two hearts were beating now would have me receive a punishment.

"Ssh Ray, I got you!", Silas soft voice whispered inside my ear.

My body relaxed a bit, knowing that once again my brother had saved me, but tears were still running down my cheeks.

Had my father really just ended a life?

I knew he was a great fighter, going off to war more than he was home.

I knew going off to war meant that he killed people.

But I had never dared to think about that.

And now that I had witnessed a murder comitted by my farther I was once again struck with fear.

I had felt how calm he was, how easy the decision had been for him.

I started to shiver and Silas cursed quietly.

Quickly he gathered me in his arms and carried me upstairs again. Something inside me yelled at me to get a grip, but I could not.

Once back inside my room, Silas placed my still shivering and crying self on my bed and took a seat beside me.

He instantly pulled me into his arms where I cried even harder.

Why had father just killed a pack member? Could he not feel how sorry they were?

"Ssh Ray, you're safe.", Silas whispered gently into my ear.

That made me cry even harder, because as much as I grieved the death of a Mercy pack member, I also feared for myself. What would have happened to me if father had learnt about my eavesdropping?

Silas smiled gently at me and lightly tipped my nose. "You're right."

"Does it really matter that much who we love? If he or she makes us happy and loves us as much isn't that enough?", I asked my brother.

Silas smiled gently at me and confessed, "I think it's more than enough, little Ray."

I smiled at him, glad that we saw eye to eye.

Instantly his mood changed and he seriously spoke, "Never let anyone else hear that opinion, at least in the Mercy pack."

I felt how tense Silas had become, so I instantly nodded my head and whispered "I promise."

He then pulled me closer to him and wrapped his arms around me. Slowly I started drifting off to sleep and in the morning I would think to myself, if everything that had happened yesterday was maybe just a nightmare. A figment of my imagination.

However, the screams of the women would haunt me for several years and would be proof enough that everything that had happened had been real.

A scream woke me up from my slumber and I shot up in bed. It took me a few seconds to realize that I had just imagined it. Exhausted I let myself sink into the cushions again.

How long had it been since I had last heard the scream in my dreams? 4 maybe 5 years?

No one had ever known that I had witnessed my father's cruel and deadly punishment, but for months I had not been sure and had lived in constant fear.

Did Levin also dread the consequences his mating with Oliver would bring?

My wolf still whimpered when she replayed the conversation we had eavesdropped on yesterday.
