The moment Maren stepped into the room, every head turned. Hostile stares met her, heavy with bitterness.

None glared harder than Wilbur’s parents–Sam and Jessi.

Maren didn’t so much as acknowledge them. Without breaking stride, she moved towards the stairs, as though

the tension didn’t exist.

Sam and Jessi looked almost pleased with themselves. They still thought of Maren as the timid, quiet girl they used to push around.

But that version of her was long gone.

And today, she was in no mood to entertain their fantasies.
