Chapter 14 A Killing
Machine
Maren reacted instantly. She reached out, gripping the man’s wrist and wrenching it sharply.
A harsh crack split the air.
His anguished scream ripped through the silence.
The brutal snap of bone filled the alleyway, mingling with the man’s cries of agony.
Maren wasted no time, driving her heel fiercely into the man’s groin.
He screamed louder this time, crumbling to the pavement, gasping desperately for air.
Before he could even try to crawl away, a sudden coldness pressed against his throat.
Glancing downward, he saw the hilt of a dagger buried deep into his neck. It had been driven in so swiftly, the pain hadn’t
fully registered yet.
Blood spilled rapidly from the wound.
He stared helplessly at Maren, shocked by the merciless ease with which she’d ended him.
Beneath her mask, her gaze was ruthless, freezing him in terror. Only at death’s doorstep did he understand his fatal
mistake.
With a heavy thud, his body collapsed, motionless.
The onlookers stood frozen, unable to comprehend the rapid violence they’d witnessed.
Yet Maren showed no signs of stopping.
Finished with her first attacker, she casually shook the dagger, droplets of blood scattering around her feet.
Her eyes remained fixed and unflinching.
She continued forward, her stride purposeful as she closed in on the remaining men.
Maren had been in a foul mood lately. She’d returned to a chaotic Sovereign Underworld after only two years away. The decay was astonishing. Had things gotten so out of control that mere street punks dared challenge her authority?
This was absolutely intolerable.
Maren’s presence radiated a crushing intensity, forcing even skilled criminals to retreat in fear.
“Are you idiots just going to stand there? Kill her!” shouted the Zopilotes member, humiliated by his crew’s hesitation.
Witnessing his man taken down so brutally, especially by a woman he’d just mocked, wounded his pride deeply.

He couldn’t bear the shame.
Spurred by his command, dozens of gangsters charged forward, brandishing weapons.
In response, the air whistled sharply with strikes.
Before their eyes, Maren vanished, leaving only a ghostly blur.
A cold breeze brushed their necks.
They reached up and found warm blood soaking through their clothes.
A few scrambled for guns, but they collapsed lifelessly before their fingers found the container.
Again, Maren flicked the blood off her dagger and fixed a cold stare upon the Zopilotes member. “You’re next.”
Only three of his men stood trembling beside him, fortunate to have hesitated long enough to survive the initial slaughter.
“Who the hell are you?” he asked, his fear evident in the wobble of his voice and the quivering of his jowls.
The others might have missed it, but he’d clearly seen her slip through his men effortlessly, her blade lethal and precise.
She carried herself like one of those international assassins plastered across wanted posters.
He now understood she was no ordinary opponent.
Regret, however, couldn’t save him now.
Without a word, Maren continued her advance, each step echoing loudly in his chest, pushing him further into panic.
“Come on, lady, we’re all in the same business. There’s no need to go this far,” he pleaded, sweat pouring down his face as he retreated nervously.
Simultaneously, he discreetly gestured to the three men beside him, signaling them to buy him some time against Maren.
Reacting instantly, one of them snatched a pistol from his waistband, grimaced, and pulled the trigger.
Effortlessly, Maren twisted her body out of harm’s way, letting the bullet zip past her harmlessly.
Within seconds, the attacker felt a cold sensation slice through his throat. His lifeless body collapsed before he even comprehended his fate.
A bullet!
She’d dodged it easily.
Maren had spotted the subtle movement towards the weapon from the start. Such attempts were child’s play to her.
“Stop! We give up! We surrender!”
Witnessing their companion’s swift death, the other two lost all their courage. They dropped down to their knees, desperately pressing their foreheads to the ground as they pleaded for forgiveness.
“He ordered us to do it! It wasn’t our fault! Spare us, please!”
Fury surged through the Zopilotes member, almost choking him with rage.
Realizing he had no allies left, he decided his only hope was escape.
Surprisingly agile despite his bulk, he sprinted nearly a hundred feet before daring a glance behind him.
