Chapter 322 Lucien Arrived
At first, Maren was stunned by the way Joseph grabbed her. But when she heard him call her Professor Morgan, she was completely thrown.
She was never a professor.
“Sir, I really think you’ve got the wrong person,” said Maren, her voice tight with confusion.
“No! Not a chance! I might confuse others, but never you! Professor Morgan, it’s been years since I attended your lecture at Ilasa Medical Academy. You seriously don’t remember me?” Joseph grabbed her arm, holding on tighter as the rush of recognition took over.
“Ilasa Medical Academy?” Maren gave him a long, thoughtful look. Then it all clicked. “You were the visiting student. Your surname is Schneider, huh?”
The memory returned in full. After one of her lectures, an older student had stopped her with a bunch of questions about her presentation. He’d been eager, bordering on relentless. She had stayed back with him for
almost forty minutes just to talk.
Still, Maren had never been an actual professor.
That one lecture had only happened because Nikolas, a friend of Ilasa’s president, called in a favor. The
president had to leave town unexpectedly, and Maren had just finished her residency back then.
“You finally remember me!” Joseph beamed as he heard her say his surname. His laugh carried a boyish kind of
joy.
“So, when exactly did you get back to the country?” Maren asked.
She remembered Joseph had eventually earned his place at Ilasa Medical Academy on his own merit. She had
assumed he’d stayed overseas ever since.
“Getting older isn’t fun. I just figured it’s time to come back while I still can.” Joseph spoke with a wistful smile.
“That makes sense. But tell me, why were those people after your life? They looked frantic, like they couldn’t
wait another second to finish you off,” Maren said, cutting to the chase.
After all those years Joseph spent overseas, why would he even show up on Higgs‘ or the Williams family’s
radar?
Joseph squinted, clearly confused.
He ran through the possibilities, racking his brain to figure out who might have it out for him.
Out of nowhere, he slapped his thigh with a sharp smack. “Wait a second! One of my students called me earlier, asking for help to treat some big shot. Maybe those people didn’t want me stepping in to save him?”
“That actually adds up,” Maren said, nodding slowly.

Chapter 322 Lucien Arrived
Given how urgently the assassins moved, there had to be more to it. Joseph had come back just to retire. He had no plans to leave the city right away.
“In that case, now that things have settled, we’ll be on our way, Maren said as she turned to go.
Not one of the assassins had made it out alive, which meant Higgs would stay in the dark about the botched hit. A second attempt wasn’t coming. Joseph was out of danger.
“I really don’t know how to thank you, Professor Morgan. After all this time, I didn’t expect I’d be in your debt again. Honestly, if you hadn’t encouraged me back then, I probably would’ve missed out on studying at flasa entirely.” Joseph showed gratitude.
“Please, just call me Maren. And you don’t owe me anything,” Maren replied with a light chuckle.
“Would it be alright if I got your number this time?” Joseph asked.
The first time he asked, Maren had let him down easy.
This time around, as he asked again, a knot of worry tightened–what if she said no again?
“Of course,” Maren replied right away, not even hesitating.
“That’s great news!” A bright spark spread across Joseph’s face.
Once they’d traded contact details, Maren walked off with Sawyer following behind.
“If it weren’t for the time or the fact that I’ve got a patient waiting, I’d have asked Maren a couple more things,”
After seeing them out, Joseph sank into the couch, finally letting his body relax.
Roughly ten minutes passed before a pink sports car screeched to a halt outside his home.
“Dr. Schneider, I’m Lucien Marshall. Dr. Kashton Truman told me to come get you. My grandfather’s in danger. Please, we need your help.” A young man stood at the front door, urgency in every word.
“I’m coming down!”
The moment Kashton’s name reached his ears, it clicked. This was the patient’s family. Joseph didn’t waste a second and bolted for the door.
He climbed into Lucien’s car, and they headed for the hospital.
“Why is he still not here?”
In the confines of the ICU’s waiting area, anxiety gripped Edwin as he paced anxiously. His eyes darted between his ticking watch and Calvert, whose frail appearance grew more concerning by the moment. The collective worry was palpable; they all doubted Lucien would return in time.
