Piercing blue eyes, flecked with gold, stared back at me. She stands tall beside Raiden, her hand resting lightly on the hilt of a sword, her posture confident but not imposing. 

Her outfit was unmistakably riding gear, tailored to her form yet practical. The faint, enigmatic smile on her face seemed almost out of place beside the stoic, commanding presence of a younger looking Raiden.

“Excuse me, Madam Valencia,” said a maid, her hands balancing a tray of snacks. She looked at me curiously before glancing at the portrait. 

I blinked, gathering my thoughts. “Who… who is this?” I asked, pointing to the painting. 

The maid smiled, a fondness in her expression. “That’s Luna Aurora, Madam. Alpha Raiden’s mate. She passed away five years ago.” 

I nodded, my throat tight. “And this P 

“It’s one of Alpha Raiden’s favorites. He insisted it be restored and hung here last year. He always said it captured her spirit perfectly.” 

I swallowed hard, nodding again, though I barely registered her words. My mind was spinning, piecing together fragments of memories and questions I hadn’t even thought to ask before. 

“Thank you,” I murmured. The maid gave a small bow and continued down the hall, leaving me alone once more. 

I eventually made my way to retrieve Castor, his restless energy constant hum at the back of my mind. Once he was secure in my arms, I returned to Raiden’s floor, but this time, I allowed myself to take in my surroundings fully. 

The walls were lined with more portraits and landscapes, each piece carefully selected and imbued with sentiment. Scenes of nature, Steele family gatherings decorated the corridor, but it was the portraits of Aurora that drew my attention most. 

There were several of her–one where she was laughing beside Raiden, another where she held Caius as a baby, and yet another where she stood alone on the beach, her dress flowing, Her gaze distant. 

It was clear that Raiden had loved his mate deeply. My chest tightened painfully. Sir Joseph’s parting words echoed in my mind.

I clenched my jaw, bile rising in my throat. If Dante were to die, could I go on without him? The thought alone was unbearable, a cold, suffocating weight that threatened to crush me entirely.

I shook my head, trying to dispel the dark thoughts.

Surely Dante would want to stay here with Raiden, wouldn’t he? Or would he prioritize finding a cure?

Dinner was served in the family dining room on the sixth floor, close to Raiden’s room. Caius, Dante, Marcy, and I sat around the table in near silence, the atmosphere heavy and stifling.
