Chapter 138
Valencia’s POV:
The room was nearly unrecognizable.

The thick scent of smoke still clung to the air, wrapping around me like a vice. Every surface bore the charred remains of the fire’s destructive path.
The once–pristine silk sheets on our bed were singed black at the edges. The oak cupboards, which had been intricately carved and polished to perfection, were now scorched beyond repair, their doors barely hanging on their hinges.
Even Castor’s handcrafted bamboo carrier, the one Nina had made for me, was little more than a pile of cinders.
The only thing left usable was the bed–sturdy, made from some ancient wood that had withstood the flames.
Sir Joseph’s voice cut through my thoughts. “We should get out of here first, Luna.”
I exhaled and nodded, adjusting Castor in my arms before following him out into the hallway. The temperature outside the room was noticeably cooler, though the scent of burnt furniture and flesh clung to the air like a ghost.
I looked around to see that almost half a dozen servants had been burnt, either on their arms or hands and my heart ached.
Nina thankfully remained unharmed d and I instructed her to make sure all the burns were taken care of and properly
treated.
As we walked, I turned to Sir Joseph. “What about the guests?”
“The guards escorted them out,” Sir Joseph replied, his tone impassive. “They left respectfully. Seven saw to it himself.”
I felt a surge of relief. Good. The last thing I needed was to deal with Jaxon’s insufferable presence any longer.
I glanced at Sir Joseph’s hands and immediately noticed the angry red burns covering his palms. My stomach twisted with guilt. He had been injured trying to stop and protect me.
“You need to get some ointment for that,” I said, my voice firm.
Sir Joseph barely reacted, his expression unreadable. “I’m fine, Luna. I-”
Before he could argue, I cut him off with the one phrase that always worked. “I am your Luna, and you do not question me.”
A flicker of amusement crossed his face before he sighed, inclining his head slightly. “As you wish, Luna.”
I watched as he turned and walked away, and only
then did I let out a slow breath.
I made my way to the fourth–floor lounge and sank onto one of the velvet sofas, my fingers absentmindedly running along Castor’s shell.
The long, jagged crack on its surface made my chest tighten with worry.
What had just happened?
I had seen the fire, felt its warmth, walked through it—but I hadn’t burned.
That wasn’t normal. That wasn’t possible.
And yet, here I was, completely unscathed.

Chapter 138
I barely had a moment to gather my thoughts before hurried footsteps echoed down the hall
Dante burst into the lounge, his hair tousled, his top buttons undone, his chest rising and falling as if he had run the entire way. His golden eyes locked onto me immediately.
“What happened?” His voice was low, but I could hear the thinly veiled panic beneath it.
I took one look at him and sighed. “You look like a mess,” I said, pushing myself up and heading toward the small bar in the corner. “Sit down first.”
Dante didn’t move. His eyes darted between me and Castor, then to the soot still clinging to my dress.
I ignored his stare and poured him a glass of water, pressing it into his hands. “Drink,” I said.
He took a long sip, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he swallowed, but his eyes never left me. “Now talk,” he said, his voice softer but no less urgent.
So I did.
I told him about the fire. About how it had started in our room. About how I had walked through it and not burned.
About the giggle I had heard.
His frown deepened with every word.
Then I told him about Jaxon’s visit and the wedding invitation.
That was the moment his grip on the glass tightened ever so slightly.
He set it down with deliberate care and turned toward the door. “A” he called.
The maid entered instantly, bowing her head slightly.
“Check all the gifts thoroughly,” Dante ordered. “If anything is suspicious, discard it. If any of them are too valuable, store them in the treasury. The rest–donate to the community.”
Alexa nodded and left without question.
I watched him closely.
He seemed angry. But of course that would be a given, considering everything that had just occurred.
“You think Castor did this?” Dante finally asked, his
gaze
egg locked onto the cracked
in
my
arms.
I nodded. “They were blue flames,” I murmured. “Exactly like yours.”
Dante reached out and took Castor from me, turning the egg carefully in his hands. The crack was deep, but a dark film covered the inside, preventing us from seeing anything.
“He’s safe,” Dante muttered, his fingers brushing against the shell.
I nodded. “I think he’s… starting to awaken.”
Dante exhaled slowly. “Do you think he’s going to hatch soon?”
I hesitated. “It’s only been a little over four months…”
“It’s possible,” Dante said, his brows furrowing. “I’ll ask Caius. He might know more.”
Chapter 138
There was a long pause before he finally spoke again. “But the thing I don’t understand.” His voice was quieter this time “How did the fire not affect you?”
1 blinked. Unsure if he’d believe my theory.
I shook my head and spoke anyway. “He’s smart,” I said. “Maybe he could tell I was his mother?”
For the first time, Dante’s expression darkened. His jaw tightened as he looked between me and the egg, something akin to fury flashing in his golden eyes.
I reached out, instinctively moving to take Castor back-
But Dante didn’t let go.
“I don’t think it’s safe for you to be near him,” he said.
I froze.
My heart lurched.
“What?” I breathed, my voice barely above a whisper.
Dante’s grip on Castor tightened. “At least until we figure out exactly what happened.”
My stomach twisted painfully. “Dante, I just told you–he didn’t hurt me. He wouldn’t hurt me.”
