Chapter 48
Dante’s POV
She moaned against me, her soft sounds fueling the fire raging in my veins. Her hands pressed against my chest, trembling but not in protest. When I finally pulled back, a thin string of saliva stretched between us, glinting faintly in the soft light of
the cot.
Valencia gasped for air, her chest rising and falling as she tried to catch her breath. My jaw clenched as I watched her. wanting to claim every inch of her again and again, yet hating the thought of the air even brushing her skin.
Fuck.
I was absolutely screwed.
How could I feel jealousy toward something as intangible as the air?
Her flushed cheeks, her mussed auburn hair spilling around her shoulders–she was breathtaking. And mine. All mine.
For now but I wasn’t going to think about that.
I reached for her gown, tugging the delicate fabric down her shoulders and revealing her creamy skin. My fingers grazed her arms as I removed the rest of her dress, and her soft shiver sent lood rushing down below. I discarded my shirt hext, letting the fabric fall to the floor without a second thought.
“Lights off, I commanded.
The room dimmed, the golden glow of the cot the only illumination. The shadows danced across her form, and I drank in the sight of her like a man starved.
My hands roamed down her body, tracing every curve, every dip, until they rested over her chest, feeling the rapid thrum of her heartbeat. She leaned into my touch, and I could feel her tention melting away under my fingers.
But as I leaned closer, pressing my lips to her neck, she whispered, “Stop”
I didn’t listen. Her voice was so faint, so soft, that it barely registered. Instead, I grabbed her wrists, pinning them above her head with one hand as I trailed kisses down her throat. My lips pressed against her skin, leaving marks of possession, and I felt her tremble beneath me.
It wasn’t until I tasted the salt of her sweat–too cold, too sharp–that I froze. A strange sensation trickled along the bond tethering our hearts, a faint pulse of unease and fear.
I pulled back sharply, my breath ragged.
She was trembling. I quickly moved towards my side table and tapped the lamp sensors. The soft orange light of the lamps instantly illuminated the room and Valencia’s figure.
“Hey,” I said softly, sitting back and giving her space. “I’m sorry. Are you okay?”
Her lips parted, but she didn’t answer. Instead, she bit down on her bottom lip, her teeth sinking into the delicate skin.
Guilt churned in my chest as I reached for the blanket, wrapping it around her trembling form. “Valencia, talk to me,” I urged gently, my voice filled with worry.
Finally, she whispered, her voice so faint I had to strain to hear it “Can you can you give him to me?”
I blinked, confused for a moment before realization dawned. She meant the egg-

Without hesitation, I rose from the bed and crossed the room, pressed the button on the cot’s side, watching as the protective dome lowered with a soft mechanical whir. Gently, I lifted the egg and returned to her, placing it in her arms.
The tense silence that followed was deafening.
“I’m sorry,” I said after a moment, my voice heavy with regret. “Thouldn’t have pushed you. It’s my fault.”
Her head shot up, her eyes wide. “Don’t apologize. It’s not your fault.”
“No.” I insisted, my tone hardening. “You told me to stop, and I didn’t.”
She let out a wry scoff, her grip tightening around the egg. “I wasn’t telling ‘you‘ to stop.”
Her words hung in the air like a weight, and my mind scrambled to make sense of them. Then, the pieces clicked into place, and a cold wave of realization washed over me.
She’s been hurt before.
Valencia’s POV
I’d told him to stop.
The words had left my mouth, soft but clear, as his lips trailed down my neck and his hands pinned my wrists above my head. I had been enjoying it–God, I had been enjoying it–but the lights had dimmed, and something inside me cracked.
In the darkness, his face became obscured. And in that moment, my heart dropped, panic rushing in like a tidal wave.
The memory came back unbidden.
Jaxon’s cruel grin as he pressed me down on the bed, his voice cold and mocking as he whispered things meant to humiliate me. His weight had felt suffocating, Ins hands bruising as they gripped me in ways that left me feeling powerless.
The sensation of helplessness. Of fear.
I hadn’t felt it in so long, yet now it consumed me.
Even as I lay there in Dante’s arms, fully aware that this was different, that he wasn’t Jaxon, my body reacted instinctively.
Terror clawed at my chest, and I froze, barely able to breathe.
Why?
Why now?
After everything I’d endured, why was I falling apart now?
I felt sad, frustrated and angry at the fact that I was still letting Jason affect me. It felt like he was still winning.
T
But why? I had barely noticed Jaxon at my wedding. I hadn’t even thought of him,
Tears pricked at my eyes as I clung to the egg, seeking solace in its warmth.
But then, I felt something strange. A wave of worry, almost palpable, washed over me. My gaze flickered to Dante, watching
as he moved about the room, his brows furrowed and his movements tense.
Then the retaliation hit me. The feeling wasn’t mine.
